All tourists stranded overnight rescued from cable cars in French Alps

At least 33 tourists spent the night at an altitude of around 3,800m after the wires of their cables cars became tangled early in the evening above Mont Blanc. Silverspot butterfly: A new breeding programme to help fight extinction

Oregon Zoo’s butterfly conservation laboratory has released a video showing how it is fighting the extinction of the silverspot butterfly by assisting the endangered species in reproduction. The lab brings in wild butterflies, caught with the assistance of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Forest Service, and creates favourable living conditions for the butterflies to lay eggs. Using high-tech recording devices, Melville Wohlgemuth determined that the head waggles sync with the animal’s sonar to help it hunt. San Diego Zoo burns $1m worth of illegal rhino horns

To make a stand against animal poaching and wildlife trafficking, San Diego Zoo burnt more than $1m worth of illegal rhino horns on 8 September. In the past storage compounds in other countries have been raided, so zoo staff decided the best way to ensure that the horns do not end up on the black market was to burn them. The ashes from the fire will be spread throughout Africa. The burn comes just before World Rhino Day on 22 September. Sep 9, 2016
