For the past 22 years researchers have been trying to figure out what happened to her, and now The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) believe she had run out of fuel, so crash-landed on an uninhabited island and lived as a castaway. Fire at Florida Islamic Centre where Pulse nightclub shooter worshipped was deliberate

A fire broke out in the early hours of Monday,12 September, at the Islamic Centre of Fort Pierce, a Florida mosque where the Pulse nightclub shooter, Omar Mateen, worshipped. St Lucie County Fire District crews put out the blaze after receiving a 911 call at approximately 12:31am. Hundreds of thousands took to the street across Catalonia on 11 September to support independence from Spain which local leaders want to deliver in 2017, despite legal challenges by the Spanish government. Cate Blanchett, the Oscar-winning actress and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees goodwill ambassador, performs alongside fellow actors Keira Knightley, Peter Capaldi, Jesse Eisenberg and others, in a new UNHCR campaign video highlighting the plight of refugees. In the video, released on Facebook on Monday, celebrities recite the poem ‘What They Took With Them,’ written by Jenifer Toksvig and inspired by first-hand testimonies of refugees. Reunion Island volcano spits out lava in fiery eruption

The Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Frances Reunion island erupted for the second time in 2016 on 11 September. The volcano is located in an uninhabited area and does not pose a danger to the public, but island inhabitants were still able to catch a glimpse of the spectacular lava flows that lit up the night. Pleasure boat crashes straight into Canary Wharf pier following fire

A pleasure boat drifted off course and crashed into the pier at Canary Wharf in London on 11 September. The BBC reported that the boat, carrying 151 people along the Thames, got into difficulty after its engine caught fire.Heavy smoke can be seen coming from the boat as it drifts towards the pier wall. The pier was closed shortly after to allow an evacuation of passengers. No injuries were reported. Sep 12, 2016

Scientists capture the spread and evolution of bacteria

Scientists from Harvard Medical School and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have produced a visualisation of bacteria evolving, spreading and quickly adapting to become resistant to antibiotics. Over an 11-day period, a giant petri dish with varying levels of antibiotics was exposed to Escherichia coli aka E.coli. The E.coli bacteria became increasingly resistant to the antibiotics, mutating at each stage of the varying concentration levels of the drugs to eventually become resistant to 1,000 times the normal level. Clashes erupt after 28 Kurdish mayors lose posts

Clashes have erupted in Turkey after 28 Kurdish mayors were removed from their posts. Some 24 are suspected of ties with the Kurdistan Workers Party and four are believed to have links with the Gulen movement which the government claims was responsible for the attempted coup in July. The statement form the Turkish Interior Ministry said that when local governments “come under the influence of terrorist organisations, it is the states primary duty to take precautions against those who have usurped the peoples will. Maryland emergency services save four people from burning car in daring rescue

Charles County Sheriff’s Office has released video showing two officers help save two adults and two infants from a burning car. The dramatic video shows Officer Lamar Hamilton and Corporal Brad Saunders battling to put out the fire and pull the victims from the crash. The driver, two infants and a second adult trapped in the car were rescued by emergency services. A third adult victim was thrown from the car in the crash. Sheriff Troy Berry also paid tribute to local resident who ran forward to hand the first responders a fire extinguisher. Sep 12, 2016
