Manish Tewari hits out at BJP over snooping row

Panaji, Nov 20 (ANI): Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Manish Tewari on Wednesday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the allegations of snooping on a young woman by the Gujarat police, saying there is a difference between security and surveillance. In an alleged taped conversation between former home minister of Gujarat, Amit Shah and Gujarat IPS officer G L Singhal aired by news portals Cobrapost and Gulail, Shah was instructing Singhal to closely monitor the movements of the woman referred to in the report as "Madhuri", which is not her real name. Addressing mediapersons in Goa, Tewari said that the BJP cannot fool people by dubbing the incident as a security issue.

Delhi Polls: AAP releases election manifesto

New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) released its election manifesto ahead of December 4 Assembly polls in Delhi. The party's member Yogendra Yadav presented a detailed manifesto in the presence of the party convener Arvind Kejriwal and other party members. Yadav said that measures for the security of people including women will be ensured when the party comes to power.

India condemns attack on woman in unguarded ATM

Bangalore/Kolkata/New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): India condemned assault on a woman, who was attacked with a machete by a burglar inside an unguarded ATM booth in Bangalore. The recent incident has yet again posed a question on safety of women in the country. The residents of Bangalore have urged the government to step up security and ensure a guard inside the ATM. Condemning the incident, social activist, Saraswati Ghosh said that preventive measures should be publicised. Echoing similar views, former police official, Kiran Bedi called for daily policing with an aim to prevent crimes against women.

India, Vietnam to enhance bilateral ties, discuss strategic partnership

New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh welcomed General Secretary of Vietnam's Communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong on Wednesday, who is on a four-day state visit with an aim to boost bilateral ties and discuss strategic partnership. Trong, who is visiting the country from November 19 to November 22, has been invited by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Singh will host a banquet in Trong's honour and both are likely to hold talks on India-Vietnam strategic partnership. Meanwhile, Trong also held a meeting with Foreign Minister, Salman Khurshid to discuss bilateral issues between the two nations.

Voters defy Maoists, Chhattisgarh records 75% Polling

New Delhi/ Chhattisgarh, Nov 20 (ANI): Despite threat calls to boycott elections by Maoists in Chhattisgarh, around 75 per cent polling was recorded on Tuesday in 72 constituencies of the state. The second and last phase of assembly polls in the Maoist-infested Chhattisgarh concluded peacefully. Last week, polling for the first phase was held for 18 seats including constituencies in Maoists-infested districts of Bastar and Rajnandgaon. The Maoists had earlier warned voters of dire consequences and asked them to boycott the polls by putting up threatening banners in different villages of the region. Not only this, they even snatched voters’ identity cards in some areas.

Heritage buildings in Kolkata set for illumination and glitter

Kolkata, Nov 20 (ANI): In a bid to attract tourists, authorities are planning to use colourful illumination to beautify major heritage buildings in Kolkata, including the famous Victoria Memorial build during the British Era in India. The State tourism department has identified four heritage buildings in the city, which include the Victoria Memorial Hall, Nakhoda Masjid, St Paul's Church, and the Town Hall. The beautification drive will see authorities using musical LED lights and sound and light shows depicting historical events at these famous places to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of these buildings.

SC issues notice to centre, states on security arrangements at religious places

New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): The Supreme Court has issued notice to the central government and all state governments to provide proper security arrangements at public places, especially places of religious worship. A bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam has asked both to file their responses to a public interest litigation (PIL) alleging that they have failed to ensure the safety and security of the lives of pilgrims visiting religious spots.

BJP files complaint against Rahul Gandhi over poll code violation

New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrote to Election Commission (EC) against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi for violating its code of conduct by making personal remarks against BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi and other leaders. BJP leaders reached election commission's office to file their complaint against Gandhi and Congress party's unit in Madhya Pradesh for making verbal attacks on Modi and on the family of one of their leaders.

Mudslinging continues over snooping row

New Delhi/ Madhya Pradesh, Nov 20 (ANI): The heat from the snooping scandal allegedly involving Amit Shah, a close aide of Narendra Modi, intensified on Wednesday. Mudslinging continued between political parties even as the girl’s father urged the NCW to ensure that the matter is not discussed any further. The Congress said that Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is equally responsible as his minister Amit Shah to answer for charges of snooping. Meanwhile the BJP said that the Congress should stop making an issue of this as the father of the girl has requested for privacy. Considering it a very serious issue, the JD (U), also said that it is necessary for Modi and his party to come out clean.

Bangalore ATM Attack: Karnataka HM calls high-level officials meeting

Bangalore, Nov 20 (ANI): Terming the ATM assault case as unfortunate, Karnataka Home Minister K J George on Wednesday said that he has called for a meeting of high-level officials to review the case. A man brutally attacked a woman with sharp weapon and robbed her inside an ATM booth in Bangalore on Tuesday. CCTV footage showed the man attacking the woman with a weapon on her face and head. The woman was lying in pool of blood for a long time and the incident came to light when two school children raised an alarm seeing blood coming out the kiosk from under the shutters.
