Paralysed ALS patient uses computer to speak with her mind

A woman with locked in syndrome as a result of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been able to speak again as a result of a brain implant that allows her to wirelessly transmit thoughts to a computer. The breakthrough means 58-year-old Hanneke de Bruijne can communicate with her family at home for the first time in at least a year.

Secrets of 6,000-year-old amulet illuminated by science

Clues about how a 6,000 year-old amulet discovered in Mehrgarh, Pakistan, was manufactured are uncovered by an imaging method reported in Nature Communications. The method, known as photoluminescence imaging, shines light to allow microstructures that are invisible under other conventional microscopes to be seen. It confirms the amulet contains two types of copper oxide and was cast as a single piece by pouring very pure molten copper into a clay mould.This study demonstrates the value of the imaging technique for archaeological artifacts, but it may also be a useful analytical tool in geophysics, engineering and environmental sciences.

Stranded cows rescued after being marooned due to New Zealand earthquake

Three cows, left stranded after a powerful earthquake struck New Zealand on 14 November, have been rescued. Footage showed the cows stranded on a small patch of grass after the land around them collapsed, triggered by a 7.8 magnitude quake. The owner had to dig a path from the top of the green island down to the ground to save them.

Timelapse shows shield being put over Chernobyl reactor

An explosion in the Chernobyl nuclear power station in 1986 demolished reactor No. 4 and spread radioactive waste across large swathes of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and other nearby countries.Now, a New Safe Confinement container has begun the process of sliding over the reactor. Once the process is completed, the new structure will enable the eventual dismantling of the aged shelter and radioactive waste. The new container was said to be the largest moveable land-based structure ever built, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which oversaw the project. The 354ft-tall arch-shaped structure has a minimum lifespan of 100 years and is made up of 36,000 tonnes of prefabricated metal.

Underwater Stone Age settlement mapped

Changes in sea level have allowed a Stone Age site to stay exceptionally well-preserved below the surface of Hanö Bay in the Baltic Sea. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden believe the site was a lagoon environment where Mesolithic humans lived during parts of the year. Seven years previously, divers discovered the oldest known stationary fish traps in northern Europe at the same location. This discovery, along with new findings including a 9,000-year-old pick axe made out of elk antlers, indicate mass fishing and a semi-permanent settlement. The settlement has now been mapped comprehensively for the first time.

Los Angeles: Mass high school walk-out in protest against Donald Trump

Los Angeles high school students walked out of classes on 14 November in protest at the election of Donald Trump. It was one of many high school student walkouts that have occurred since the presidential election. Students from Garfield High School marched in a planned rally to Mariachi Plaza and were joined by students from other schools. They carried American and Mexican flags to raise concerns about their immigrant families.

Syrian fighters scramble to destroy IS suicide car bomb speeding towards them

Dramatic footage shows the moment Syrian Democratic Forces scrambled to destroy an Islamic State suicide car bomb that was barreling towards them in Raqqa, Syria, on 14 November. The car bomb is destroyed in a massive explosion after two missiles are launched. Kurdish activists said IS had used at least five car bombs in attacks against the Syrian Democratic Forces and Kurdish YGP militia since the operation to retake Raqqa began on 12 November.

Kelp forests fall prey to ravenous rabbitfish

A warming climate is making seaweed-eating fish hungrier – and they’re munching through kelp forests off the coast of New South Wales at up to 300 bites per hour, a new study finds. Adriana Vergés and colleagues at the UNSW and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science recorded an underwater video spanning a 10-year period until 2012 during which time the water warmed by 0.6°C. The kelp forests, which provide habitat for hundreds of species, disappeared and fish communities became increasingly dominated by tropical herbivores - especially the rabbitfish (Siganus fuscescens) and drummer fish (Kyphosus bigibbus). Dr Vergés said the rabbitfish and drummer fish were the most voracious, eating fronds within hours at an average rate of 300 bites per hour. The study is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
