How Kathrine Switzer’s bib 261 became a symbol for women in sports

Running legend Kathrine Switzer has received numerous letters and photos from women around the world. Switzer first showed them how to be fearless using 261. In 1967, the 20-year- old Syracuse University journalism student, who unofficially trained with the men’s cross-country team, registered for the 71st Boston Marathon, at that time considered a male-only event. Upon her acceptance into the race, she received a bib—number 261. Through what she now calls a series of coincidences, she became the first woman to enter and finish the Boston Marathon with an official bib number. But this feat didn’t come without challenges. North Koreas deputy ambassador to the United Nations Kim In-ryong said on 17 April that the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US. Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, he accused the US of using gangster-like logic and sending a message to Pyongyang with its missile strikes on Syria. Cleveland Police are looking for a suspect who allegedly killed a man and broadcast the act on Facebook Live. Identified as Steve Stephens, the suspect claimed that he had killed some other people as well. The constitutional referendum in Turkey appears to have ended in favour of change. With 96% of the ballots counted, the ‘Yes’ votes made up 51.5%, according to the state-run news agency Anadolu. This would mean a replacement of the parliamentary system with an executive presidency. The constitutional changes could also keep President Erdoğan in office until 2029.The opposition criticised the High Electoral Board’s decision to accept unstamped ballots.
