Police destroy three Maoist camps, recover cache of arms in Odisha

Odisha, Sep 05 (ANI): Following an exchange of fire, police destroyed three camps and recovered a cache of arms and other items during clashes with Maoists in the red corridor of Odisha. The Koraput and Malkangiri police initiated a joint operation and raided the forest area near Majhiguda village where the camps were operated by a Maoist organisation. Inspector General of Police, Yashwant Jethwa, said on Friday that the raid was a success. No loss of life has been reported although it is believed that some Maoists might have sustained injuries during the encounter. Jethwa also added that the camps were used as a connecting link with Maoists of other states. The Maoists managed to escape after the gun battle. Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s. Sep 5, 2014

Shutdown in Manipur continues for second day

Manipur, Sep 05 (ANI): Security has been stepped up as shutdown called by United Naga Council (UNC), in Manipur entered second day on Friday (September 05), to protest against recent killings of civilians by security forces. On August 30, two civilians were killed and 26 injured in violent police firing to control a rally protesting against the imposition of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 144 in Ukhrul district. The resolution to impose a ban in the state was passed on Monday (September 01) after UNC President, L Adani, convened a high level meeting with representatives of Naga Civil Organisations and chiefs of different Nagaland tribes. Flood situation worsens in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 05 (ANI): Floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, disrupted normal life in Jammu and Kashmir, submerging vehicles and disrupting flights on Friday. Sixty-five people were killed after heavy rains caused flash floods in Kashmir, including a wedding party on a bus that was swept away, officials said on Thursday (September 04). Authorities declared a disaster alert in the region after two days of heavy rain hit villages across the Kashmir valley, causing the worst flooding in two decades. Heavy rain is expected for the next 48 hours. The state's main river, the Jhelum, and its tributaries are flowing several feet above the danger mark. Residents in Srinagar city said villages were inundated and marooned people were yet to get any government aid. According to local people, there have hardly been any rescue operations yet. Home Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting in New Delhi to review the flood situation and has dispatched members of the National Disaster Response Force to assist the state government. Sep 5, 2014
