MP temple stampede: Death toll rises to 109, over 100 injured

Datia, Oct 14 (ANI): At least 109 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede triggered by rumours of a river bridge collapse near a remote Hindu temple in Datia region of Madhya Pradesh. The State government ordered a judicial inquiry into the mishap which was a shocking re-run of the tragedy at the same site in 2006 when 50 pilgrims were washed away. Senior Medical Officer at a government hospital in Gwalior, Dr GS Patel informed that the hospital is looking after relief and rescue operation. Pilgrims panicked when rumours spread that the railings broke on a bridge that led to the temple thereby triggering the stampede. Some devotees were crushed to death under the feet of fellow worshippers, others drowned after falling or jumping into the river Sindh. Even as the cyclone devastated a large section of both the affected states, Home Affairs Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that it is to the relief that the destruction caused is much lesser than the 2004 destruction caused by tsunami. Cyclone Phailin headed inland on Sunday after making landfall from the Bay of Bengal, bringing winds of more than 200 kph (125 mph) that ripped apart homes and tore down trees. He also confirmed that more than 2,00,000 mud houses and standing crops were damaged and victims would be paid the compensation amount after due assessment.
