Yahoo has announced that one billion of its user accounts were hacked in 2013. In the attack, affected accounts may have had names, email addresses, telephone numbers, date of birth and hashed passwords stolen. Aleppo residents raid abandoned rebel HQ for basic supplies

Aleppo residents are taking advantage of rebel groups leaving the besieged city by raiding their abandoned headquarters. Residents found basic food and supplies at the headquarters of rebel group Jaish al-Islam, based in a school affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Education. Murtaza Ahmadi became an online sensation after being pictured wearing a plastic bag mimicking Lionel Messi’s shirt, and now he has been able to meet his hero in Qatar. Murtaza met Messi before the game, was the mascot as Barcelona came out onto the pitch for a friendly against Al-Ahli Saudi FC, and even joined in on the team photograph. Murtaza had asked his father for a shirt like Messi’s, but it was outside the means of his family. Syria: Hundreds protest outside Downing Street over Aleppo offensive

Around 200 people demonstrated outside 10 Downing Street on 13 December, calling on the UK government to do more to help the people of Aleppo, Syria. Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad say they have control of 98% of the city, and the Russian ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Vitaly Churkin said that military action in the area has ceased. Isis blitz Palmyra: Russian tanks and APCs seized by Islamic State in surprise advance

Footage released by Islamic State-affiliated news agency Amaq reportedly shows IS forces taking control of Palmyra on 11 December. Fighters can be seen standing next to abandoned Russian tanks and armoured personnel carriers at security checkpoints after Syrian and Russian forces fled the city. The ancient city is viewed as a significant battleground in the war against IS, having originally been seized by IS forces in May 2015, it was taken back by Syrian and Russian troops in March 2016. The recapture of Palmyra was seen as a huge success and a concert was even held in the city. Now IS has captured the city famed for its ancient ruins, taken prisoners and seized valuable weaponry. Wisdom the albatross is at least 66 years old and going strong. The egg she is incubating at the moment with her partner is thought to be her 41st chick. Government forces clashed with rebel fighters in a bid to retake the city of Aleppo. Footage released by the Syrian army shows them firing weapons while sweeping through the streets, as pro-government forces claim to have taken 99% of the city. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned of atrocities against civilians in eastern Aleppo, and footage shows the decimation of parts of the city. Dramatic CCTV footage shows woman being abducted and robbed in Manchester

The Greater Manchester Police have released CCTV footage from a dramatic kidnapping and robbery in Astley on 19 September. A woman was grabbed by two men off the street, forced into a van, and then taken to the Old Boathouse pub on Higher Green Lane where they demanded money from her. She was punched twice in the head, and the men threatened to throw her in a nearby canal. The two suspects then escaped in the van, which was later found burnt out.
