US Electoral College formally makes Donald Trump next US president.

The US Electoral College met on 19 December, casting its ballots to officially confirm Republican Donald Trump as the next president. Usually the vote is a formality but protests and campaigns for the college to vote for someone else have been prominent. Meetings were held in every state capital and the District of Columbia. The Congolese presidents chief diplomat, Barnabe Kikaya, said on 19 December that there was no scenario in which Joseph Kabila would step down at the end of his mandate at midnight. Kikaya said a new president must be elected before Kabila may step down. Elections are not due until next year. Hundreds of anti-Kabila demonstrators defied a ban on marches against the presidents plans to stay in office past the end of his term and gathered in Kinshasa amid a heavy military presence. Man arrested for kicking woman down stairs at Berlin U-Bahn station

A man who is suspected of kicking a woman down a flight of stairs at a Berlin underground station has been arrested. Police have detained the 27-year-old. The woman tumbled down the stairs, falling face first onto the platform below – she broke her arm in the fall and had to be treated in hospital. The incident happened in late October, and video shows a young woman being followed into the Hermannstrasse stop by a group of men, one of whom kicks her in the back, causing her to tumble down the stairs. First ever footage shows pointy-nosed blue ratfish in its natural habitat

Video footage of Hydrolagus cf. trolli, the pointy-nosed blue ratfish, from the north-east Pacific ocean represents a range extension for the species and – for the first ever – the closest living relative of the shark can be seen alive, in its natural habitat. The species was originally described from specimens collected off New Caledonia in 2002. Police have released CCTV footage of the moment a man was stabbed 10 times in an unprovoked attack in east London. The father-of-two spent a week recovering from his injuries in hospital after puncturing his lung as well as suffering injuries to his chest, stomach, bowel and liver. 67 migrants have been rescued from a crammed van in Croatia. 42 had to be hospitalised because of carbon monoxide inhalation, exhaustion and hypothermia.Two Bulgarian people smugglers were arrested.Two of the migrants, who almost suffocated, were boys aged between 10-12.
