Tibetans stage protest against Chinese President Xi Jinping outside Hotel Taj Palace in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 19 (ANI): Scores of Tibetans staged a protest Friday morning outside Hotel Taj Palace where Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife are staying. Protesters carrying placards that read "Freedom is my birth right", "Freedom of Tibet, Security of India" raised anti-China slogans. They shouted slogans like "We want freedom" as police tried to cordon them off from the area. Some Tibetans also tried to enter the premises of the hotel, but police managed to prevent them from doing so. Security has been tightened around the hotel. Sep 19, 2014

Police gun down Maoist in fierce gun battle in Odisha

Malkangiri, Sep 19 (ANI): Police gunned down a Maoist, who had a bounty of rupees 400 thousand on his head, during a fierce battle in Malkangiri district of Odisha. The Maoist has been identified as Erra Madkami alias Sundhi Dalai. Acting on a tip-off, District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel launched a combing operation and also recovered arms and ammunition. Inspector General of Police, Yashwant Jethwa said that exchange of fire took place in the forest area near a village. The police recovered a sten gun, a 303 rifle, kitbag, posters, banners, Maoist literature, medicines, and other materials during search operation. Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s. Sep 19, 2014

Bill Gates lauds India's Action plan to reduce newborn mortality rate by 2030

New Delhi, Sep 19 (ANI): Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates praised India for the pioneering work in polio eradication and said the country's plan to achieve its target of reducing the newborn mortality rate to single digit before 2030 is possible. Bill Gates was accompanied by his wife Melinda Gates to attend the launch of health programme Indian Newborn Action Plan (INAP) in New Delhi, which was inaugurated by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan. In India the present death rate is 29 per 1,000 live births. Of the 2.8 million newborns who die at birth worldwide, India contributes 700,000. While speaking at the event, Bill said there are lessons to be learnt from India's fight against polio which may be applied against other diseases also. The World Health Organisation declared India free of the crippling polio virus in March, making the country's almost two-decade-long, multi-billion-dollar effort one of the biggest public health achievements in recent times. Srinagar, Sep 19 (ANI): Hundreds of evacuees boarded Indian army vehicles to leave flooded region of Jammu and Kashmir. More than 75,000 people were still in partly submerged homes in Srinagar, where roads have been transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. The Indian army has deployed about 30,000 troops for rescue and relief operations and soldiers distributed 2,24,000 litres of water and food to survivors. A senior official of India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), PV Sandhu, said they would urge the government to provide transportation facilities to the flood victims. The court on Wednesday commuted Sayedee's death sentence to life imprisonment. The Islamic leader is convicted of war crimes during the country's war of liberation in 1971. The decision against Sayedee, a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, prompted strike calls by his party, and provoked scattered violence in Dhaka, and the northern district of Rajshahi. Sayedee, had appealed against the decision by a war crimes tribunal over crimes of arson, looting, murder and rape, and the apex court on Wednesday ordered that he spend the rest of his life in prison.
