Six suspected Bangladeshi militants arrested in West Bengal

North 24 Parganas, Oct 14 (ANI): West Bengal police arrested six suspected Bangladeshi militants in the Uttarpara area near the Basirhat border of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. An Indian mobile SIM card was also recovered by the police from their gang leader Mohammad Aziz. According to the police, all these militants belong to Bangladesh's Narayanganj city and further investigation were going on till reports last came in. Oct 14, 2014

Cyclone Hudhud: Navy Chief R K Dhowan on relief and rescue operations

New Delhi, Oct 14 (ANI): Navy Chief Admiral RK Dhowan on Tuesday said that Indian Navy is lead service with regard to operation Lehar and priority is to provide relief material to the surrounding areas of Andhra Pradesh and wherever required. Naval diving and relief teams have already been deployed to the various district of the state. Efforts are also on to carry out a survey to find out the damage in the naval airport and other areas, however there is no major damage to Ships or submarines. After Cyclone Hudhud battered the Andhra coast, the Indian Navy launched 'Operation Lehar', a massive search and rescue operation, to assess the damage and rush help to areas still reeling under the effect of the devastating storm. Flourishing apple trade in Shimla town boosts business

Shimla, Oct 14 (ANI): Apple business is booming in northern hill town and famed tourist destination Shimla, registering an annual growth from 35 billion to 45 billion rupees, proving a boon for the economy. Apple farming, which is the biggest business of the state, is not only giving good business to its farmers and traders, but the state government is also launching different schemes and initiatives to help grow the trade. Different varieties of the fruit are being sold out in large quantities at the local markets in Narkanda, Shimla, Dhali, Solan and Parwanoo during the onset of winter. On an average, the farmers get 1,000 rupees for a box containing 20-25 kg of apple. But this year, farmers are getting between 1,000 to 2,200 rupees for the same box. Vice-chairman, Himachal Pradesh, Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Mohinder Satan, said that with each year passing, more are more farmers and traders are joining this business considering its profit. Pranab Mukherjee hopes for strengthened ties with Norway on his three-day visit

Oslo, Oct 14 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee said that India is keen to expand scope of relationship with Norway. He was invited by King Harald Vth and Queen Sonja, at a gala dinner at the Royal Palace at Oslo after he was given a ceremonial guard of honour earlier in the day. Mukherjee arrived in Norway's capital Oslo on Sunday and was received by Mayor Harald Espelund of Ullensaker. Pak Rangers foil bid to break into Karachi's Central Jail

Karachi, Oct 14 (ANI): Pakistani paramilitary officials claimed to have foiled a bid to break into Karachi's Central Jail. Addressing a news conference in Karachi, a senior Rangers official, Colonel Tahir Mehmood said Rangers personnel had discovered a 40-metre-long underground tunnel dug under a house near the central jail. Mehmood said they had arrested suspects from a banned militant organisation but did not name it or say how many were detained. However, he said the arrested men had revealed that a tunnel was being dug to enter directly into the jail barracks where high-value targets are being held. He said around 10 metres of further tunnelling was required to enter the jail premises. The Karachi jail holds a large number of high-profile militant detainees and has repeatedly come under threat in recent years. Mehmood said nearly 100 dangerous terrorists were present in the cell near the well where the suspects wanted to enter through the tunnel. Oct 14, 2014

He has extended his condolences to the bereaved family of the TMC leader. According to reports, 73-year-old Thakur breathed his last in a city hospital in Kolkata on Monday. Thakur, who represented Bangaon Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, had been suffering from a lung infection.
