Indian Navy pays tribute to sailor killed after recovery vessel sunk off Vizag coast

Visakhapatnam, Nov 09 (ANI): Indian Navy paid tribute to its sailor who was killed after Torpedo Recovery Vessel sunk off the Visakhapatnam coast during a naval exercise in which four others went missing. Navy performed the last rites of commander Satish Soni by giving him state honour while the bereaved family and friends mourned and offered prayers. Soni’s wife, Sumitha Jayanth offered her last respects at the funeral. A torpedo recovery vessel sank off the coastal city of Visakhapatnam killing at least one person, the navy said on Friday, in the latest accident to raise concerns about the ageing fleet. Four other crew members are missing from the 28 personnel on board when the ship sank late on Thursday (November 06). The vessel was on an exercise to recover practice torpedoes fired by fleet ships, when flooding occurred in one of the compartments, the navy said in a statement. Nov 9, 2014

Qazigund, Nov 09 (ANI): At least two personnel of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured in a militant attack in Qazigund town of Kashmir’s Kulgam district, said police. The militants escaped taking advantage of darkness, added police. They also said search operations had been launched in the area to nab the assailants. The injured troopers were shifted to a nearby medical facility. The militants also opened fire at the bus in which the CRPF personnel were traveling. India has been bolstering its defences along the de facto border with Pakistan, fearing militant groups fighting the US-led coalition in Afghanistan will turn their energies to Kashmir, where it is trying to end a 25-year insurgency. Tamil rights groups urge govt to take up fishermen issue with Sri Lanka

Chennai, Nov 09 (ANI): Tamil Rights groups screened a documentary in Chennai showcasing the plight of their fishermen and urged Central government to raise the issue with the Sri Lankan government. Five Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in 2011 on charges of smuggling drugs and on October 30, the Colombo High Court held them guilty. Talking to mediapersons in Chennai, the founder of ‘the May 17 Movement’, a group demanding an independent state for Tamils living in India and Sri Lanka, Thirumurugan Gandhi, said the Indian government needs to take up the investigation very seriously. Gandhi alleged that despite Sri Lankan defence personnel visiting India time and again, the government has not bothered to take up the issue with them. Nov 9, 2014

The Ministry of Rural Development runs a special scheme on mushroom farming, which motivates many farmers to adopt this alternative form of farming. Meet Nilotpal Sinha, a teacher turned entrepreneur who runs "Vivekananda Mushroom centre" at South Hurua in North Tripura. Started mushroom farming in 2003 in a small area, today his centre produces 6 kg of crop everyday. Sinha earns Rs. 25,000 to 30,000 in a month by producing milky and oyster mushrooms. Mushroom consumption in India is comparatively low, but 55 per cent of the households consume mushrooms in their daily diet. Nov 9, 2014

Panaji, Nov 09 (ANI): Former Goa Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has been sworn in as the state's next Chief Minister after Manohar Parrikar. Parsekar took oath as the chief minister of the state and pledged to work for the welfare of the state and abide by the norms and duties ensued on him. He was administered oath by state Governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhawan in Panaji. Parsekar was earlier chosen unanimously as the chief ministerial candidate after a legislature party meeting. Manohar Parrikar, who is expected to become the next Defence Minister of the country, earlier resigned as Goa Chief Minister. New Delhi, Nov 08 (ANI): Uma Shankar Shah and Seema Shah, an artist couple from Nepal exhibited their various etchings and oil paintings in Delhi depicting the cultural mix of Nepal and India. Their work reflects the impressions of Indian Mythology, Ramayan and Buddhism which comes out so well that it becomes difficult to distinguish between the two cultures. While Seema Shah comes from the ancient Indian city of Varanasi, Umashankar Shah is from the plains of Mahottari in Nepal. The artwork of both artists is well appreciated by the visitors. The artist couple from Nepal is looking for better exposure and appreciation in India. The exhibition titled 'Sacred Spaces' will continue at Shridharani Gallery at Triveni Kala Sangam till November 14. Nov 8, 2014
