Strike in Bangladesh takes toll on trade and bus service with India

Akhaura, Nov 4 (ANI): Trade between India and its neighbouring Bangladesh is facing the brunt of continuous strikes and unrest in Dhaka as hundreds of passengers are also stuck due to halt in bus services across the border. On Saturday, the bus services resumed after almost a week, but the visitors expressed their anger, as the transportation service to Bangladesh is still very uncertain due to regular strikes in Dhaka. Trade in Tripura and Bangladesh has been badly affected and the business community claims that there is a dip in the number of trucks transporting goods across the border. Normally around 200 trucks loaded with various items from Bangladesh enter Tripura through the Akhaura LCS but at present due to the adverse law and order situation in Bangladesh, the number of vehicles plying is less than 20.

Demand to boycott Commonwealth meet in Sri Lanka increases

Chennai, Nov 4 (ANI): Student wing of Free Tamil Eelam held a protest on Monday in Chennai, demanding India to boycott the Commonwealth Heads Meet in Colombo against Sri Lankan war crimes, amid speculations of Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's participation. Arputhammal, mother of Perarivalan who is facing death sentence in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, also participated in the protest and said that the Commonwealth meet should be cancelled. Meanwhile, DMK leader TKS Elangovan said that his party has demanded that the Indian government should not participate in the meeting.

Jayanthi Natarajan urges PM to boycott CHOGM

Chennai, Nov 04 (ANI): Union Environment Minister, Jayanthi Natarajan urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to boycott Commonwealth Heads Meeting in Colombo, as a mark of protest against the war crimes committed by Sri Lankan regime on Tamils. Natarajan said that she was hopeful that Singh would take a positive stand on the issue.

BJP against banning opinion polls, asks EC to convene all party meet

Allahabad, Nov 04 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Monday said that the party is not in favour of banning opinion polls, and added that the Election Commission should convene an all-party meet to discuss this issue. The Congress Party has written to the Election Commission (EC) to restrict opinion polls ahead of the elections. The legal department of the Congress Party stated that opinion polls can be misused, and they are not scientific or credible.

Omar urges Pakistan to respect ceasefire along the border

Militant attack in Assam: Death toll increases to seven

Guwahati, Nov 04 (ANI): Death toll in the attack by suspected Garo National Liberation Army insurgents on a group of people in Assam’s Goalpara district has risen to seven. Talking to mediapersons in Guwahati, A P Raut, ADG (Law & Order), Assam Police said that six persons were gunned down on the spot, while 10 others were seriously injured with one of them succumbing to his wounds on the way to hospital.
