Voters defy Maoists in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh/ New Delhi, Nov 13 (ANI): A historic voter turnout of 67 per cent was registered in the first phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh on November 11. Naxal strongholds like Bastar and Rajnandgaon districts witnessed the heaviest turnout in a decade, while some constituencies witnessed a turnout of up to 75 per cent. The Naxals tried to disrupt polling in some areas. They killed security personnel in Dantewada and Kanker. In comparison to 2008, the scale of violence was limited. However, the turnout this time is especially significant because the Naxals had repeatedly called for a boycott of the vote, and warned villagers to stay away. The second and final phase of voting for the 90-member House in Chhattisgarh will be held on November 19. Counting is scheduled for December 8. Nov 13, 2013
