Rajasthan on alert after spurt in swine flu cases

Jaipur, Jan 17 (ANI): Authorities in Rajasthan have been on alert after a spurt in swine flu cases. So far, seven people have died due to swine flu in the state this year. The administration has set up special counters in premier hospitals and deputed special teams of doctors to monitor the situation. Health officials said the virus had weakened in the past two-three years, but its re-emergence was a cause for alarm. The premier Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur has examined 44 samples of swine flu and admitted seven of them since January 01, 2015. Swine flu is caused by the H1N1 virus. H1N1 symptoms are similar to those produced by other influenza viruses - fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and respiratory problems. Jan 17, 2015

Kulgam, Jan 17 (ANI): National Conference MLA Abdul Majid Larmi was shot at by suspected militants in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Saturday. Larmi's PSO was injured in the incident. The minister was rushed to a hospital in Anantnag and is undergoing treatment. Police is investigating in the matter to find out about the attackers and purpose behind the same. McDonalds Pune outlet throws street kid out for trying to buy Fanta float

Pune/ New Delhi, Jan 17 (ANI): A McDonalds restaurant in Pune reportedly threw a street kid out when he entered the joint to buy a Fanta float. The incident was described in detail through a Facebook post, by a customer, who had brought the child with her into the restaurant. The woman in her post on a discussion thread on Reddit also alleged that the employees were rude to her as well for bringing the kid into the joint's premise. The street child was forced out of the restaurant but the woman still bought him the Fanta float and gave it to him outside the restaurant, she claimed. The staff of the JM Road outlet, however, refused to comment on the issue. This is the second such incident at the outlet, which has been reported in the last six months. Jan 17, 2015

Foggy morning in Delhi: road traffic, train and flight schedules affected

New Delhi, Jan 17 (ANI): Delhi woke up to another foggy morning on Saturday disrupting normal life. Apart from road traffic, 68 flights were delayed and six cancelled. The fog also affected the movement of trains with more than 50 delayed and eight rescheduled. The minimum temperature early on Saturday morning was recorded at 8.4 degrees Celsius. Police arrest Islamic State sympathiser in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Jan 17 (ANI): Police in Hyderabad arrested an Islamic State (IS) sympathiser when he was about to board a flight to Dubai. The police detained 22-year-old engineer Salman Moinuddin at the airport. After interrogation, police said Moinuddin confessed that he was going to join the IS along with his British-national girlfriend Nicky Joseph. They had planned to meet in Dubai and then travel to Syria through Turkey. Sudarshan added an investigation is underway in the matter. However, Moinuddin’s father evaded questions from media. Philippines, Jan 17 (ANI): An emotional Pope Francis, wearing a plastic poncho over his vestments to protect him from the wind and rain on Saturday, comforted survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, the Philippines' worst natural disaster that killed about 6,300 people 14 months ago. Tens of thousands of people wearing yellow raincoats cheered when Francis emerged from his plane in the coastal city of Tacloban, 650 km (400 miles) southeast of Manila. Worshippers, many with tears in their eyes, stood amid puddles in a mud-soaked field as the pope comforted them. He said he "respected the feelings" of those who felt they had been let down by God because of the disaster but implored them to move forward in their faith. Mumbai, Jan 17 (ANI): An employee of a security agency allegedly spiked the tea of his three colleagues on a cash delivery van and scooted with Rs 2 crore after his accomplices waylaid the vehicle in Vile Parle on Friday. Police said the incident took place in Western Express Highway late Friday night and a hunt was on to nab the prime accused Sadre Alam and his three associates. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Virendra Mishra, said Alam asked his three colleagues to stop the van at Worli under pretext of some work and later brought tea for his colleagues, which was spiked with sedatives. Mishra said Alam and his three associates entered the van after two guards fell conscious and the driver felt drowsy. PM Modi says committed to meeting budget deficit goal

New Delhi, Jan 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he is committed to meeting this year's budget deficit target, welcoming a cut in interest rates by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the back of falling inflation. In a speech, Modi said his government would cut wasteful spending, streamline the payment of welfare benefits and raise investment in roads and railways to boost economic growth in Asia's third-largest economy. Modi's comments signalled his assent to RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan's call for "sustained high quality fiscal consolidation" as a condition for further monetary easing after a surprise quarter-point cut on Thursday. The 64-year-old prime minister said it would be difficult to revive economic growth but promised to deliver incremental reforms. Jan 17, 2015

Wipro quarterly profit beats estimates

Bengaluru, Jan 17 (ANI): India's third-biggest software services company Wipro reported a near-9 percent rise in third-quarter profit, slightly ahead of analysts' forecasts, helped by a rise in clients' technology spending. The company said revenue from its IT services business is expected to be $1.8 billion to $1.85 billion in the January-March period, representing growth of up to 3.4 percent from the preceding quarter. Wipro also announced the appointment of Jatin Dalal, senior vice president in the finance department, to take over from retiring CFO Suresh Senapaty from April. Jan 17, 2015

While Michael Keaton received his first nod as Best Actor for ‘Birdman’, Meryl Streep picked up her 19th nomination for ‘Into The Woods’. J.K. Simmons, who just won the Golden Globe for ‘Whiplash’ is the front-runner in the Best Supporting Actor category but he’ll have stiff competition from fellow nominees Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton & Mark Ruffalo. Bradley Cooper nabbed a Best Actor nod, nudging out “Selma’s” David Oyelowo and “Nightcrawler’s” Jake Gyllenhaal. A notable snub for Best Actress was Jennifer Aniston for her much praised performance in ‘Cake’. However the category will be well represented with nods to Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon & Julianne Moore. Hosted this year by Neil Patrick Harris, the award show will broadcast live on February 22nd. LONDON Fans braved the weather for the U.K. premiere of ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’. Star Colin Firth led the way down the red carpet along with fellow cast members Mark Strong, Taron Egerton and Sofia Boutella.
