Alternative farming gives ray of hope to Aurangabad Farmers

Aurangabad, Feb 06 (ANI): Two brothers in Maharashtra have cultivated sweet limes in lieu of regular winter crops through innovative technique, using less water. The duo - Anil Chaudhary and Sunil Chaudhary - of Aurangabad district have come up with alternative farming of sweet limes to keep their cultivation going and earn their bread and butter. Anil planted around 1,500 sweet limes saplings in his eight acres of dried farm by taking loan from a bank. He connected his farm to a water body through pipe line which is situated 5-6 km away from his farm to save his cultivation from getting dried up. He said the farmers should not succumb to depression of not repaying the loans. India has two crops: Kharif - which is sown in summer and harvested during winter and Rabi - which are sown in winter and harvested in summer season. Feb 6, 2015

US President Barack Obama says 'religious intolerance' in India would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): US President Barack Obama on Thursday said "acts of intolerance" experienced by religious faiths of all types in India in the past few years would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi. The comments came a day after the White House refuted suggestions that the US President's speech at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi, in which he touched on religious tolerance, was a "parting shot" aimed at the ruling BJP. Hours before winding up his three-day visit to India on January 27, Obama had said, "Every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution, fear or discrimination. India will succeed so long as it is not splintered on religious lines." Obama condemned those who seek to use religion as a rationale for carrying out violence around the world. Feb 6, 2015

Declare election of candidate concealing criminal antecedents null and void: SC

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): The Supreme Court has said that the election of a candidate, who conceals his or her criminal antecedents during the nomination process, should be declared null and void. The apex court ruled that the suppression of criminal antecedents, especially relating to heinous crimes, by a candidate during nomination deprives voters to make an informed choice and creates impediments in the free exercise of electoral right. The judgment was delivered in a case relating to non-disclosure of full particulars of criminal cases pending against a candidate, Krishnamoorthy, who was elected as the President of Thekampatti Panchayat, Mettupalayam Taluk in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu in 2006. Krishnamoorthy's election was challenged on the sole ground that he had filed a false declaration suppressing details of the criminal cases pending against him, and therefore, his nomination ought to have been rejected. Delhi Polls- A riveting duel between comrades turned rivals results of which are yet to be witnessed

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): New Delhi is in the middle of election frenzy with two major players - Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party and Kiran Bedi of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -locked in a tight race to the finish. Delhi goes to polls on Saturday for the second time in 14 months after the last elections threw up a hung assembly. Never before has a state election transfixed the attention of a nation as it has done this time around where two former bureaucrats, Magsaysay awardees and anti-corruption activists, are pitted against each other. The capital city, an amalgamation of people from almost all the Indian states, is witnessing a too-close-to-call fight between BJP and AAP, which captured people's imagination with its promise of corruption free rule. Congress party, which ruled the capital for the past 15 years, has been reduced to a fringe player amid seething anger over a slew of corruption scandals that tainted its last stay in power. Climate change providing impetus to child trafficking: Kailash Satyarthi

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): Nobel laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi warned that children end up bearing the brunt of natural calamities caused by climate change as families get displaced, they are forced into child labour, prostitution and child trafficking. Satyarthi was speaking at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) in the national capital. The DSDS, which is a global platform for experts to hammer out goals for 2015 climate talks, aims at discussing sustainable development goals with emphasis on energy and environment and clean energy for all. Thousands of children, mostly from poor rural areas, are taken to the country's cities every year by trafficking gangs who sell them into bonded labour or hire them out to unscrupulous employers, promising to send their parents their wages. Meanwhile, Chairman of UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri said that the job of child rights activists like Satyarthi was only going to get infinitely more difficult with the impact of climate change. Earlier in the day, Fabius attended the annual sustainable development summit and said that a global deal to curb carbon emissions must recognise each country's right to develop. He had said efforts to reach an agreement would fail if any country believed it would hurt their economic prospects. Meanwhile, Javadekar said India and France could meet ahead of the Paris talks to iron out differences between the two nations. Feb 6, 2015

Radio emerges as Kashmir's hero post floods

Srinagar, Feb 06 (ANI): Radio has emerged as the ultimate choice of mass media for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the floods that wrecked havoc in September last year. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley last year. Roads in Srinagar were transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. When all channels of communication including phone lines and other mass media networks like the state owned television channel Doordarshan were down, it was FM services of state owned station 'Radio Kashmir' which kept the people up to date with the latest happenings and also acted as a platform where their grievances were highlighted. As a result of this a lot of people in the state still prefer to listen to radio over other mediums of mass communication like television and newspapers. Feb 6, 2015
