Alternative farming gives ray of hope to Aurangabad Farmers

Aurangabad, Feb 06 (ANI): Two brothers in Maharashtra have cultivated sweet limes in lieu of regular winter crops through innovative technique, using less water. The duo - Anil Chaudhary and Sunil Chaudhary - of Aurangabad district have come up with alternative farming of sweet limes to keep their cultivation going and earn their bread and butter. Anil planted around 1,500 sweet limes saplings in his eight acres of dried farm by taking loan from a bank. He connected his farm to a water body through pipe line which is situated 5-6 km away from his farm to save his cultivation from getting dried up. He said the farmers should not succumb to depression of not repaying the loans. India has two crops: Kharif - which is sown in summer and harvested during winter and Rabi - which are sown in winter and harvested in summer season. Feb 6, 2015

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): US President Barack Obama on Thursday said "acts of intolerance" experienced by religious faiths of all types in India in the past few years would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi. The comments came a day after the White House refuted suggestions that the US President's speech at Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi, in which he touched on religious tolerance, was a "parting shot" aimed at the ruling BJP. Hours before winding up his three-day visit to India on January 27, Obama had said, "Every person has the right to practice his faith without any persecution, fear or discrimination. Declare election of candidate concealing criminal antecedents null and void: SC

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): The Supreme Court has said that the election of a candidate, who conceals his or her criminal antecedents during the nomination process, should be declared null and void. The apex court ruled that the suppression of criminal antecedents, especially relating to heinous crimes, by a candidate during nomination deprives voters to make an informed choice and creates impediments in the free exercise of electoral right. The judgment was delivered in a case relating to non-disclosure of full particulars of criminal cases pending against a candidate, Krishnamoorthy, who was elected as the President of Thekampatti Panchayat, Mettupalayam Taluk in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu in 2006. Krishnamoorthy's election was challenged on the sole ground that he had filed a false declaration suppressing details of the criminal cases pending against him, and therefore, his nomination ought to have been rejected. Metro services to start at 4 AM on polling day in Delhi

New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): The Delhi Metro will start operations at 4 AM on Saturday to enable voters to reach their respective polling booths to exercise their franchise to elect 70 members to the Delhi Assembly. A Delhi Metro release said that the trains will run at intervals of 30 minutes till 5:30 AM on all its lines. Thereafter, it said frequency would increase and trains will start running as per the normal schedule after 5:30 AM. Announcements in this regard are being made in the trains as well as on station premises. The Election Commission has been carrying out an awareness campaign with people commuting on the Delhi Metro with an aim to encourage them to vote in the assembly polls. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is also scrolling voter awareness messages on display screens installed in train coaches. Fabius met Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and said that major issues between the two countries needed to be tackled before the conference. Asian Development Bank president calls on PM Narendra Modi

Hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were devastated by the worst flooding in decades in the Kashmir valley last year. Roads in Srinagar were transformed into stagnant canals strewn with wreckage, trash and dead animals. When all channels of communication including phone lines and other mass media networks like the state owned television channel Doordarshan were down, it was FM services of state owned station 'Radio Kashmir' which kept the people up to date with the latest happenings and also acted as a platform where their grievances were highlighted.
