Kashmir dances to its first internet android radio channel

Srinagar, Feb 17 (ANI): The first android-based radio FM channel in Jammu and Kashmir is bringing in more listeners day by day. City FM JK was started in December 2014 by 28-year old mass communication graduate, Tariq Ahmad Salfi, and aimed specifically at the local audience. The radio station in Srinagar operates from a small room equipped with modest equipment like laptops and the odd sound mixer. But days after it was launched, Salfi was informed by his technical team that City FM JK radio waves had even penetrated other countries including the UK., US., Austria and Russia. Salfi has sold his car and invested a lot of his money in his humble project, one he says may be fast becoming at par with radio channels of business tycoons. He says his channel can also be an opportunity for employment in the valley. Despite poor internet connectivity in Kashmir, his local audience has grown; many claim his channel stands apart. Indian citizens to get e-passports by 2016

Coimbatore, Feb 17 (ANI): In a bid to rein in the number of fake passports, Indian government is working on to issue electronic passports or e-passports to the citizens by 2016, an official said in Coimbatore city. An e-passport will have a chip on its back cover with the holder's biometric details stored in it. In the initial phase which began in 2014, the government had issued 10 million e-passports, out of which majority were issued by Indian embassies abroad. From this year, the government is planning to introduce e-passport service across the country in 72 Passport Kendra Service (PSK). E-passports might be able to fully check the number of fake passports but it will certainly bring it down, said Swaminathan. Feb 17, 2015

Palamu, Feb 17 (ANI): Police in Jharkhand claimed major success after they arrested a hardcore Maoist rebel involved in several anti-government operations. State police and personnel of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had launched a joint operation to arrest him. Police said the Maoist was arrested from Naudiha Bazar of Palamu where he was hiding. The rebels have operated for decades across a wide swath of central and eastern India, and grew in strength during recent times in areas where poor, tribal villagers came into conflict with mining companies seeking resources for industrialisation. Indian origin boy shot dead in US, family seeks justice

Kheda, Feb 17 (ANI): An unknown assailant shot dead an Indian origin-boy, Amit Patel in New Jersey in the US. A native of Kheda district in Gujarat, Amit Patel, 27, was living in Irvington town of New Jersey for the past 15 years with his parents and wife and owned a liquor store there. His mother and wife, who were in India to attend a wedding, immediately left for US on receiving the news. At the time of the incident, Amit Patel was sitting at the counter of his shop, while his father was asleep. The sound of the shot woke him up who then called his friends seeking their help, but the victim died on the spot. Meanwhile, Amit Patels fathers best friend, Janak Gour demanded justice. Few days ago, the incident of an elderly Gujarati man from Kheda district badly beaten up by American police had also sent shock waves among the Gujarati community living in the US. Feb 17, 2015

Malda, Feb 17 (ANI): In yet another fratricidal incident, an Indian soldier killed his colleague and injured four others in West Bengal on Tuesday (February 17). Basant Singh opened fire on sleeping personnel after a heated argument, killing a head constable at a Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Malda town. Deputy Inspector General of Border Security Force (BSF), Raj Singh Rathor, said the assailant ran away after the incident and search is on to nab him. Indian armed forces have been grappling with rising incidences of soldier suicides and fratricides.
