A former leader of Bangladesh's ruling party was sentenced to death by a war crimes tribunal on November 24 in connection with atrocities committed during the country's war of independence from Pakistan. Bhopal's toxic legacy lives on, activists urge govt to address woes

Bhopal, Nov 30 (ANI): An activist working with Bhopal gas leak victims, Satinath Sarangi, said that even 30 years after the industrial disaster the government has not been able to provide the victims the necessary relief and rehabilitation. Thirty years later, the toxic legacy of this factory lives on, say human rights groups, as thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste remains buried underground, slowly poisoning the drinking water of more than 50,000 people and affecting their health. Sarangi, who is the founder and managing trustee of charitable Sambhavna Trust and a member of Bhopal Group for Information and Action, admits that government has not been able to provide the tragedy survivors with right treatment. Meanwhile, managing trustee of non-profit organisation, Chingari Trust, Rashida Bee, shared her experience of providing therapies and working for rehabilitation of special children born in families affected by 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
