Bangalore, Oct 2 (ANI): Ex Lokayukta Santosh Hedge on Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court's order to disqualify convicted lawmakers from fighting elections. On July 10, the Supreme Court had ruled that an MP or MLA would be immediately disqualified if convicted by a court in a criminal offence with a jail sentence of two years or more.

Hardoi, Oct 2 (ANI): Even as the Congress party is mulling over withdrawing the ordinance to protect convicted lawmakers, after party Vice President Rahul Gandhi dismissed it as 'nonsense', the Samajwadi Party stated that the ordinance should be retained. Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal said that if the ordinance is withdrawn then it will prove that in the country an individual is bigger and not the government.

Rahul Gandhi meets PM, expresses regret about ordinance outburst: Reports

New Delhi, Oct 02 (ANI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has reportedly expressed his regret on Wednesday about the ordinance outburst, which was cleared by the cabinet, according to sources. Sources added that Gandhi, in a 25-minute meeting with the Prime Minister this morning, clarified that he did not mean to undermine the authority of the PM or his cabinet. He, however, reiterated that he does not agree with the executive order that allows convicted MPs to remain in office while their appeal is being heard by a higher court. Gandhi's scathing review of the executive order came while the PM was in the United States.

On Board, Oct 02 (ANI): Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh breathed an air of optimism after his meeting with Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif in New York by saying that relations with its nuclear-armed neighbour are moving towards normalization. The meeting, which was held on the sidelines of Singh's visit to the US to address the United Nations General Assembly, lasted for more than an hour and India called the talks "useful: while Pakistan called the atmosphere "very positive".

On Board, Oct 02 (ANI): Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said that he will not resign over Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi trashing the controversial ordinance on 'tainted politicians' passed by cabinet in New Delhi. Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi openly opposed the ordinance passed by cabinet on convicted politicians saying that it was a complete nonsense and should be 'torn up' and 'thrown out'. The cabinet passed an executive order that could allow convicted lawmakers to continue to hold office and stand in elections, ahead of national polls due by next May. Dismissing claims of his resignation by the opposition parties, Singh said that he would take up the matter with his cabinet colleagues.

Nation remembers Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, Oct 02 (ANI): The nation on Wednesday paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 144th birth anniversary. President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other political leaders offered floral tributes at his memorial 'Raj Ghat' in New Delhi. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart Lal Krishna Advani also paid floral tributes at the ' Raj Ghat'. A large number of people including school children also visited Rajghat and observed a minute's silence to pay their homage. Several functions have been organized throughout the country in Mahatma Gandhi's honour.
