Maoists call for shutdown in Ranchi

Ranchi, Oct 05 (ANI): Maoists have called for a shutdown in Ranchi district of Jharkhand on Saturday (October 05) following encounter of their fellow rebel, bringing normal life in the region to a standstill. Reportedly, the insurgents were enraged when police forces killed a Maoist in the region a few days ago during an encounter. Tourists expressed their fear saying they were uncertain about their safety while travelling. In Ranchi, daily commuters were left stranded as trains and buses did not ply.

12 Maoists surrender in Odisha

Malkangiri, Oct 05 (ANI): Exploited by group members and pressurized by police officials, 12 Maoists, including five women, surrendered before police in Malkangiri district of Odisha. Superintendent of Police, Akhileswar Singh, said that most of the Maoists, including a couple, belonged to Poplur Dalam and Kalimela Dalam in the Naxal-hit district adjoining Andhra Pradesh.

Pranab inaugurates Europalia-India festival in Brussels

Brussels, Oct 05 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee and Belgium's King Philippe inaugurated the Europalia Festival, a cultural extravaganza showcasing India's rich cultural heritage through 450 events to be held over a period four months. Europe got to see the diversity of India, when a classical Indian Band and a troupe of dancers performed for the distinguished guests of which many belonged to the royal family of Belgium. The guests were also treated to an exhibition of Indian statues which included the Hindu god of art and culture, Nataraja. Mukherjee arrived in Brussels with an aim to enhance educational and cultural exchange between the two countries, this being his maiden trip to Europe after taking over as the Head of the State.

Jaganmohan Reddy begins his fast-unto-death as bandh continues

Vishakhapatnam/Hyderabad, Oct 05 (ANI): YSR Congress President Jaganmohan Reddy launched his fast-unto-death on Saturday against the Centre's move to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and to create Telangana. Reddy asked why the decision on Telangana cannot be reversed when it is possible to reverse government’s decision on the Ordinance over convicted politicians. Meanwhile, the decision also triggered protest by certain groups and a shutdown in port city, Vizag, which paralysed the region. City roads remained deserted and public bus stands, schools and shopping malls were shut. Residents said that locals are venting their frustration and anger over the bifurcation and are taking to streets.
