Fans disappointed with Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana as both teams exit from FIFA World Cup

BRASILIA, June 27 (ANI): Dejected fans poured out of the Brasilia national stadium after Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana left both teams short of qualifying for the Round of 16. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the tournament but missed a glut of other chances, leaving his team level on four points with the United States in Group G. Ghana defender John Boye's first-half own goal was followed after the break by a goal by Gyan. The World Cup exit completed a miserable two days for the Africans who were embroiled in a pay row and suspended midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari for ill-discipline hours before Thursday's kickoff. According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Boateng vulgarly insulted coach Kwesi Appiah, while Muntari made an unprovoked physical attack on a GFA official. Jun 27, 2014

Loud celebrations erupt in Algeria as it makes it to the last 16 of World Cup for first time

Algiers, June 27 (ANI): Algerians lit off fireworks and cheered wildly as the country's national team made it to the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time with the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Russia. On a momentous night for the North Africans, who were the last team through to the knockout round, Islam Slimani rose to the occasion and nodded home in the 60th minute to cancel out Alexander Kokorin's sixth-minute header. Thousands of fans who watched the game on a giant screen in the centre of Algiers clapped and waved national flags. There was controversy surrounding the Algerian goal, however, with Russian's Italian coach Fabio Capello complaining that goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev had been distracted by a laser beam shone from the crowd. Television images seemed to back up his assertion, with what appeared to be green beams flashing across the keeper's body as he tried to reach the cross. Jun 27, 2014
