5 Maoists held, 21 surrendered in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, Feb 18 (ANI): As many as 21 Maoist cadres surrendered before police and 5 other were arrested in Andhra Pradesh, said a senior officer in Visakhapatnam. The Superintendent of Police, Vikram Jeet Duggal, said five rebels were arrested also. The government has launched various schemes to lure cadres from Maoists fold. The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of millions of landless tribal people. Apart from prisoner releases, the Maoists have also demanded an end to tourism in parts of the state where tribals live. Feb 18, 2014

Contact police if harassed in Delhi: Ninong Ering

New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Ninong Ering urged northeastern students to contact police, if they are harassed by people in New Delhi, in the wake of an alleged diktat by a local body. Ering said this after a kangaroo court (khap panchayat) in New Delhi took a decision on Sunday to force northeast people to vacate the Munirka locality in the national capital. When asked about what is being done by the provincial ministry to provide safety to the northeasterners in Delhi, Ering said a helpline has been started exclusively for them to register their complaints. The Finance Minister appreciated his governmnet for keeping a stability in the economy and said that the last 10 years of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule have seen considerable amount of growth. Meanwhile, announcing the budget, Chidambaram stated that growth would recover to at least 5.2 percent in the second of 2013/14 from 4.6 percent in the first half. Dhikura/ Kathmandu, Feb 18 (ANI): All 18 people aboard a small plane that crashed in bad weather in Nepal were killed, an army spokesman said, after searchers battled heavy rain and harsh winds to reach the rugged site one day after the event. The crash highlights the poor safety record of Nepal, where more than a dozen airlines fly to nearly 50 airports, many in remote hills and mountains shrouded in cloud and cut off from roads. All passengers, and a crew of three were killed in the crash on Sunday at Masine hill in the village of Dhikura, 200 km (125 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, officials said. Feb 18, 2014

Panaji, Feb 17 (ANI): Goa police on Monday filed chargesheet against former Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal under new criminal law amendment act (2013). Tejpal is accused of sexually molesting a junior women colleague inside an elevator in Goa's Grand Hyatt Bambolin Hotel during annual think fest 2013. If proven guilty, Tejpal can be sentenced for more than seven years of imprisonment. The team investigating the case had travelled to New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore to take the statements of the victim's family and friends.
