Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile wishes success to PM Modi on Independence Day

Dharamsala, Aug 15 (ANI): Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, wished Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a successful term as the country marked its 68th Independence Day on Friday. Sangey greeted Indians and said that India’s rise would mean Tibet’s growth too. Modi, who sworn-in as the PM a little over two months ago, gave his maiden Independence-Day speech in New Delhi, addressing the issues of poverty and sharing his vision of a digital India. India achieved its independence from the colonial British rule on August 15, 1947, ending more than 200 years of rule. Meanwhile, Sangay also aspired for Tibetans’ own land’s independence and for the return of spiritual leader, Dalai Lama to Tibet.

Bangladeshis observe national mourning day to honour Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Dhaka, Aug 15 (ANI): Hundreds of Bangladeshis paid their respects to the country's founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Friday (August 15), who was killed by a group of army officers 39 years ago, along with most of his family. Events begun at sunrise on Friday, a national holiday in the country, with the national flag flown at a half-mast as hundreds of Bangladeshis waited in line to pay their respects to their former leader. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is one of Mujibur's daughters, visited a memorial in Dhaka to pay her respects, before visiting the Banani Graveyard where her family members are buried. Members of the political establishment were also present to pay their respects.

Clashes in Pakistan after shots fired at opposition leader Imran Khan

Pakistan, Aug 15 (ANI): Clashes broke out on Friday as tens of thousands of Pakistani protesters from two anti-government movements converged on the capital, presenting the 15-month-old civilian government with its biggest challenge yet. Gunshots hit the vehicle of former cricket star and opposition politician Imran Khan as he led his supporters through the eastern city of Gujranwala. Residents brandishing ruling-party posters attacked his convoy, throwing shoes and stones. Khan was not injured, his spokeswoman said. Khan and populist cleric Tahir ul-Qadri are slowly leading separate processions towards Islamabad where they plan to occupy main streets until Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resigns.

Students dressed as JL Nehru take out march to celebrate I Day

Coimbatore, Aug 15 (ANI): As many as 1400 school students dressed as India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru celebrated nation’s 68th Independence Day by marching across the Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu on Friday. New Delhi, Aug 15 (ANI): The AK Antony panel of Congress party submitted review report of its poll debacle to party chief, Sonia Gandhi, following its defeat in the general elections. More than 100 children hospitalized after eating I Day sweets given at Govt schools in Kanpur

Chaubepur, Aug 15 (ANI): About 450 students fell ill of which nearly 100 were hospitalized on Friday after consuming sweets distributed at government schools in Kanpur’s Chaubepur area. The students are being treated at the local hospital and the matter is being examined closely. DM of Kanpur, Roshan Jacob said that all efforts are being made to avoid casualties. She added that the sweet shop from where the sweets were ordered has been sealed and samples are being taken for examination.

Nothing new in PM Modi's Independence Day speech: Congress

New Delhi, Aug 15 (ANI): Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden Independence Day speech delivered from the ramparts of the Red Fort had nothing much or new to offer and lacked impact. Another Congress leader Salman Khurshid added that Modi’s speech was more of an election speech rather than a speech by a Prime Minister. Earlier the Prime Minister unfurled the flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort after inspecting the guard of honour. During his address, he touched upon issues related to poverty, women safety, female foeticide, the importance of the IT sector, the discontinuation of the planning commission, making India the global manufacturing hub of the future and the problem of farmer suicides.
