Indian sports officials arrested in Glasgow

New Delhi, Aug 03 (ANI): Indian wrestler Rajiv Tomar on Sunday said that the arrest of Indian sports officials in Glasgow will bring disgrace to the country and spoil the winner image. Rajeev Mehta, secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association and a senior member of the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games, and wrestling referee Virender Singh Malik, were arrested in Glasgow on Saturday evening, evoking shock and shame among athletes and sports lovers. The two were in custody over the weekend and will be produced in a Glasgow court on Monday. 17 die due to Japanese Encephalitis in Guwahati

Guwahati, Aug 3 (ANI): Seventeen people, including two children, died due to Japanese Encephalitis in Assam and 14 patients more were being diagnosed for the brain fever. Almost 570 people in India have died after contracting encephalitis, commonly known as "brain fever", health authorities said, warning the death toll may rise with more people still at risk. Outbreaks of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanese Encephalitis are common every year in India, especially during the monsoon season, and claim hundreds of lives. But this year, major outbreaks - usually most prevalent in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar - have spread to regions such as West Bengal and Assam. Lucknow, Aug 3 (ANI): Workers of BJP launched a campaign to clean Gomti River in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. BJP workers, who took up cleaning work of the river in Lucknow, said the campaign was on the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Clean River Ganges' project. Workers, who removed weeds from the riverbank, said river Gomti was a tributary of river Ganges only and it also required a clean up. Hindus bathe in the Ganges in an act of ritual purification, yet the 2,500 km (1,600 mile) river stretching from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal is full of industrial effluent and untreated sewage, its banks strewn with garbage. Film show on Mirza Ghalib enthralls audience in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 03 (ANI): People attended a special film show on renowned Sufi poet, Mirza Ghalib, in Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir in large numbers. The film was screened in the auditorium of Radio Kashmir, which is controlled by the Indian government and a non-commercial radio station operating from Kashmir. Ghalib, the most prominent Urdu and Persian poet of India during the Mughal period, took to poetry recital to boost languages. His poetry comprised mostly of romance, love and sadness. In order to honour the poet and highlight his contribution to Urdu poetry, the radio station screened a film on him in collaboration with Actors Creative Theater (ACT) group. Nainital, Aug 03 (ANI): In a bid to empower women and make them independent, a state-run tea garden of Uttarakhand decided to raise women workforce in its tea gardens. The tea garden of Uttarakhand government in Ghorakhal region of Nainital district, employes mostly women, who do most of the work in the gardens, from plucking tea leaves, cutting branches to processing them in factory. A female worker, Jeewanti Devi, said salaries are given on time and they do not face any problems. There are 180 women employed in the government run plantations in the district.
