American software giant Microsoft Corp officially launched the new Lumia 640 and phablet version Lumia 640 XL in India on 7 April.
Lumia 640 and 640 XL were originally unveiled at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2015 in Barcelona last month, and now they have set foot in the subcontinent.
Prior to the launch, rumour had it that the company would release 4G-LTE models, but it is now confirmed that only 3G variants will be made available on the official e-commerce site Flipkart.
Lumia 640 sports a 5.0-inch IPS ClearBlack LCD screen and ships with the latest Windows Phone 8.1 (with Lumia Denim update) OS, 1.2GHZ Snapdragon 400 series quad-core SoC (System on Chip), 1GB RAM, 8GB inbuilt memory and 2500 mAh battery - which can run the phone for almost 36 days in standby mode.
As the XL-tag implies, it not only boasts an extra large - 5.7-inch HD IPS ClearBlack display, but also houses more superior camera and battery specifications. It comes packed with a 13.0-mp camera with Zeiss Optics, LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, auto-focus, 1/3-inch sensor size, Lumia Camera 5, and full HD video recording. And on the front, it houses a 5.0-mp wide-angle snapper with a full HD video recording feature.
Lumia 640 XL houses a high-capacity 3000 mAh battery, which can run the phone for close to 37 days in the standby mode.

The company has reportedly confirmed that the Lumia 640 will be made available exclusively on Flipkart for ₹11,999 (HERE) around mid-night, whereas the phablet variant Lumia 640 XL can be purchased at both online and brick-and-mortar stores across India.
Competition:
With a sub-₹12,000 price-tag, Lumia 640 will be competing with popular smartphones like Motorola Moto G (2 Gen), Asus Zenfone 5, Xiaomi Redmi 2, Motorola Moto E (2 Gen), Micromax Canvas Nitro A311, Samsung Grand Prime, HTC Desire 620G DS, Sony Xperia E3 and others.
On the other hand, Lumia 640 XL will be up against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, Huawei Honor 4X, Asus Zenfone 6, HTX Desire 816G and others.
