The death of K Balachander has left the entire South Indian film industry in mourning. The legendary director passed away on Tuesday evening at around 7:10 pm.

K Balchander, 84, died at a private hospital due to urinary infection and age-related ailments. He was admitted to the hospital last week and was under observation for more than a week.

His final rites will be performed today evening as per Hindu customs. K Balchander's son Prasanna will perform the last rites and the director will be cremated at Besant Nagar burial ground around 4 pm. His mortal remains have been kept at his residence for public viewing.

Dignitaries from Kollywood and politicians have been paying their last respects to K Balachander one after the other. Rajinikanth, Sarath Kumar, Vaiko, Udhayanidhi Stalin and a host of other big names from film fraternity have paid homage to the legend.

K Balchander, in his 45-year-career, worked in more than 100 films, of which he directed 80. He was also remembered as a man who shaped the careers of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Prakash Raj and Ramesh Aravind.

The filmmaker made films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. "Thillu Mullu", "Maro Charitra", "Moondru Mudichu", "Duet", "Aval Oru Thodarkadhai", "Apoorva Raagangal", "Avargal", "Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu", "Achamillai Achamillai" and "Sindhu Bhairavi" are some of his popular movies.
