Venezuela: Inauguration of constituent assembly sparks new protests

Venezuela has inaugurated the new legislative superbody elected last week. The 545-member constituent assembly has been condemned by governments across Latin America, the U.S. and EU. Opposition protesters clashed again with security forces in Caracas. They believe the assembly endangers Venezuelas democratic freedoms. The all-powerful body may decide to dissolve the opposition-run congress and will rewrite the constitution, giving the ruling Socialist Party vast new powers. Aug 5, 2017

A bomb-detecting dog with bone cancer was given an official send-off before he was put down. Cena served with Corporal Jeff DeYoung in Afghanistan before he adopted the pooch after DeYoung was diagnosed with PTSD. After the dogs diagnose, DeYoung made a bucket list of activities to do before his death. Cena received a final salute watched by service members and the public. Venezuela goes to polls as opposition boycotts Nicolas Maduros socialist power-grab

Venezuelans have begun to vote in the controversial election of a constitutional super-body. Opposition parties are boycotting the election which is opposed by a large majority of Venezuelans. Voters only get to select the super-bodys members not vote on its establishment. The election is expected to grand the ruling Socialist Party widespread new powers. President Nicolás Maduro states this move will bring peace after months of violent protests. Critics say it will allow Maduro to dissolve the opposition-run Congress. Thief arrested after getting stuck in traffic

A thief failed to escape after getting stuck in traffic in Birmingham. Martin Tolan was pursued by police after stealing a Mini convertible when he crashed into cars waiting at red lights.
