Shah Rukh Khan's heist drama "Happy New Year" (HNY) is all set to have a grand release in China next year. The film will be releasing in at least 2,500 screens in January-March quarter, according to Business Standard.
China is one of the biggest markets for films and its box office is projected to be worth $4.9 billion this year. Earlier, a very few Hindi films have been released in the country but the growth in the Chinese box office collections have led Indian producers to tap the market in the country, reported the daily.
Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner, which had distributed "HNY", is planning to partner with a Chinese company to release the film in China. It will reportedly be dubbed in Mandarin language to cater to a wider audience. The run-time of the film will also be reduced for the Chineses viewers.
"HNY", which hit the screens in India, is currently the second highest grossing film of 2014. The film minted around ₹203 crore at the Indian box office and its worldwide gross collections amount to ₹383 crore, according to Koimoi. The film has set several records including the highest opening at the Indian box office.
The SRK starrer is all set to complete 40-day theatrical run on Sunday. The film's business has declined due to new releases and is expected to be closed soon. "HNY" performed fantastic business in overseas markets including the US, the UK and Australia. It remains to be seen as to how the film fares at the Chinese box office.
Aamir Khan's 2013-blockbuster flick "Dhoom 3," which was released in China this year, has fared well at the box office.
The action adventure film debuted at ninth spot at the Chinese box office by collecting $1.35 million in its opening weekend, according to film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh. It will be interesting to see whether "HNY" will be able to beat "Dhoom 3" opening weekend collections at the Chinese box office.
Directed by Farah Khan, "HNY" is about a bunch of six losers who take part in a dance competition and plan to rob diamonds worth ₹300 crore. The film has Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivan Shah in pivotal roles. It is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment.
