Micromax's YU Televentures had postponed the launch of its 2016 flagship, Yunicorn, in India from May 19 due to election results, but it now appears we have a date. The company announced on Wednesday it has now finalised an event in New Delhi on May 31, where it will showcase YU Yunicorn.
In the revised invites sent to the media, YU was quoted by BGR India as saying: "Assembly will be redefined on the 19th (Vote counting day) and hence Yunicorn will Redefine Flagships on the 31st of May, 2016 [sic]." YU did not reveal any additional information about the handset, but the company has hinted at a few details.
YU has been teasing the Yunicorn smartphone for a short while and it has said the new handset would change how the flagships are looked at. The company took a swing at the flagship brands for pricing their handsets high. Also, YU's partnership with Cyanogen has ended, which means the Yunicorn is going to run stock Android OS instead of CM software.
But that's just a small piece of information compared to the largely unknown Yunicorn's spec-sheet. Based on the rumours so far, it is expected that the Yunicorn will sport 4GB RAM, a 1.81GHz MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor, a metal unibody and a fingerprint scanner.
Earlier this month, YU founder and CEO Rahul Sharma teased the Yunicorn as an "insanely beautiful" device, which is expected to break records, rules and flagships. After the Yutopia's failure, it is important for YU to make a comeback by not just offering premium specs, but also pricing the handset right.
While YU postponed the launch of the Yunicorn, Smartron launched its first flagship — t.phone — for Rs. 22,999. For the price, it offers a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Apical's Assertive Display technology for better readability in sunlight, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, a 13MP primary camera with dual LED flash and a 4MP front-snapper with 2-micron pixel size lens.
Smartron t.phone is equipped with a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support, a USB Type-C port and a dual-tone metal body. YU will be competing with the t.phone and other affordable flagships coming this year.
