Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is one of the most significant days for Jews, who spend most of the day in synagogues observing 25-hour long fasting and prayer.
During the special day, which is observed on the tenth day of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar, devotees seek for forgiveness and promise not to repeat their sins.
Yom Kippur is devoted to "afflicting the soul" and is a period when people get a chance to repent on the sins they have committed in the previous year.
It is considered as the "Sabbath of Sabbaths" and work is considered forbidden during the period.

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holy of holies of Jewish time. It is that rarest of phenomena, a Jewish festival without food. If a wo/man says, I will sin and repent and then I will sin again and repent, s/he is not in a position to repent. Likewise if s/he says: I will sin, and the Day of Atonement will atone for me, the Day of Atonement will not atone for her/him. - M Yoma 9:9
