The German trio in the automobile world: Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have models ranging from hatchback to luxurious sedans and SUVs. Mercedes-Benz and Audi also have supercars in its product belt while BMW is yet to come up with one. The Bavarian brand is often been teased by its rivals for the not having a supercar. BMW M division's vice president of sales and marketing, Peter Quintus, told Drive that no firm plans were in place for a challenger for Audi R8. But he did admit that there had been internal discussions on the subject. Even though the project is in a nascent stage, the news that BMW has plans to bring a supercar is itself expected to create ripples in the industry.
It is clear that BMW is late for the party. But after it decided to enter the fray, the company will make sure it will get a grand reception. To make this sure Quintus says it will have some form of hybrid technology involved if engineers get a green light on the project. Considering the success of McLaren P1, Porsche 918, and Ferrari LaFerrari, it looks like BMW is plotting a hypercar than a supercar.
Quintus also confirmed that concepts on the project already exist. However, do not expect it to become a reality in the near future. "At the moment, our priorities are on other issues. The two big factors beyond that is our development capacity and also the investment required. We would love to do it. Our engineers would love to do it. But there has to be the money to do it," Quintus said.
For now i8 hybrid will remain BMW's torchbearer in the high-end car world and it will also enjoy its role as the brand's halo car.
