Ayan Mukherji's directorial venture, "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" had a bumper opening at the domestic box office, making it Ranbir Kapoor's biggest opener.
The romantic film starring Ranbir and Deepika Padukone in the lead role has earned a whopping ₹19.45 crore on the first day at domestic box office.
"Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" was one of the most-awaited films of the year and was expected to break the record of the first day collection of Salman Khan starrer "Dabangg 2" since both were released on non-holiday Friday.
However, "YJHD" failed to beat Salman's "Dabangg 2" record by a slight margin. "Dabangg 2" collected ₹21.10 crore in India, while "YJHD" raked in ₹19.45 crore.
But on a positive side "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" has emerged as the biggest opener released this year, pushing back Saif Ali Khan's "Race 2" which minted ₹15.12 crore.
The romantic film produced by Karan Johar, was released in more than 3,000 screens across India. Generally, the morning shows open to an average occupancy, but the love story registered occupancy of around 80-90 percent in multiplexes and around 60-70 percent in single screens.
The film had a fabulous start at overseas box office too and is expected to beat "Barfi" and "Rockstar" - both featuring Ranbir in the lead role.
"UK: YJHD Fri £ 118,159 ... #Barfi £ 229,783 [weekend], #Rockstar £ 184,592. AUSTRALIA: YJHD Fri A$ 69,501 ... #Barfi A$ 138,257 [weekend], #Rockstar A$ 99,676 [weekend]. Ranbir and Deepika are working together for the first time after their breakup in 2010. The film also stars Aditya Roy Kapur of "Aashiqui 2" fame and Kalki Koechlin in important roles.
