India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. had a balanced year in terms of product launches in 2015. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer strengthened its scooter portfolio with the launch of Fascino, commuter segment with the launch of Saluto motorcycle and sports bike segment saw arrival of the R3.
For 2016, the company plans to add more motorcycles in the line-up and performance motorcycle segment will see the coming of the MT-09 naked street motorcycle, reports Zigwheels. The launch is expected in the late second half of 2016. Before that, the company will showcase the model at the Auto Expo 2016, scheduled to begin on 3 February. It is expected that the response from public during the show will decide the fate of MT-09's India entry.
The MT-09 is powered by 847cc three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that develops 113bhp at 10,000rpm and 87.5Nm of torque at 8,500rpm mated to six-speed transmission. The motorcycle sports traction control system with two different riding modes. Built on diamond type frame, the MT-09 is employed with telescopic front forks with 137mm travel while rear features swingarm (Link type) suspension. The braking is taken care by 298mm dual disc at front brakes while rear gets 245mm single disc brakes. The motorcycle also comes with optional ABS.
When launched, the MT-09 will be pitted against Triumph Street Triple and the Kawasaki Z800 in India. To keep the rivals on toes in terms of pricing, Yamaha will be prompted to adopt completely knocked down (CKD) line. The motorcycle with CKD assembly is expected to cost Rs 8-9 lakh, ex-showroom.
