Svetlana Kuznetsova, Angelique Kerber, Dominika Cibulkova and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska are the last four competing in the women's singles semifinals of WTA Finals 2016 Singapore. While Kerber and Cilbulkova qualified from the red group of the tournament, Kuznetsova and Radwanska made it to the knockouts stage from the white group.
Russian Kuznetsova, who defeated Radwanska in her opening singles match of the tournament, was the first one to make it to the last four, while the Polish tennis star became the latest one to qualify after a comfortable 7-5, 6-3 over Karolina Pliskova in her match on Friday.
Kuznetsova, ironically, was the last to qualify for the WTA Finals this year after beating Daria Gavrilova in the Kremlin Cup, Moscow, just ahead of the tournament. With hotshot Serena Williams having pulled out of the tournament, the likes of Kerber, currently ranked No 1 in the world, Radwanska, Pliskova and Halep were expected to make it to the semifinals of the WTA Finals 2016.
However, the Russian, who has been ranked 8 in the tournament, gave an impressive show as she won two out of her three matches in the group stage against Radwanska and Pliskova, but she lost out to Muguruza on Friday.
Road to the semifinals
Kerber: Wins against Cibulkova, Halep and Madison Keys.
Radwanska: Wins against Muguruza and Pliskova, but a defeat against Kuznetsova.
