Another summer release made its way to the theatres and knocked the ball out of the stadium with its opening box office collections. Alien: Covenant debuted at number 1, beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 for the top spot this week.
The new Alien sequel movie opened to $15.28 million at the box office on Friday and it is expected to touch $40 million easily by the end of the weekend. The opening box office collections of Alien: Covenant has paved way to the movie becoming the third best for sci-fi series, as of on Saturday, Deadline reports.
Covenant is running on track with the expectations as the film was expected to earn at least $40 million post the domestic release. While the opening is good, the film couldn't come close to Prometheus earnings, which stood at $51 million.
The Ridley Scott's directorial release made $4.2 million from the Thursday night previews alone. The film released in 3,760 theaters in North America and is fast pacing towards the expected mark. Though not a fantastic start as Marvel – Disney's summer release, Guardians 2, film analysts are positive about the film earning its returns on investment.
Internationally, Alien: Covenant has collected $46.7 million as of Wednesday. Apart from US, the Alien sequel released in 54 more markets which include Germany, Argentina, Russia, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. The film opened in the UK, France, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Italy a week in advance and earned an opening of $42 million.
If the film fares well on Sunday (which many feel it will), Alien: Covenant's worldwide box office collections will easily surpass an estimate of $80 million collaborative opening box office collections.
The film successfully scared Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 to the second position after standing strong against King Arthur: Legend of the Sword that released last week. GotG Vol 2, which made $145 million over its opening weekend, earned $8.8 million of Friday is headed for a $33 - $35 million collection this weekend, Box Office Mojo predicts.
