In what could be seen as an indication of hollowness in the Indian educational system, none of the country's reputed institutions made it to the list of world's top 200 universities, according to a new global ranking. The United States dominate the rankings with 19 of them featuring in the list of 50.
The QS World University Rankings that selected 800 best universities from around the world have placed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of US on top of the list, followed by Harvard University (US), University of Cambridge (UK), UCL (University College London) (UK), and Imperial College London (UK). Six universities from US and four from UK made it to top 10 list.
Not even a single Indian university made it to world's top 200 list, but 11 of them made a cut in the top 800. IIT Delhi is placed at 222, IIT Bombay (233), IIT Kanpur (295), IIT Madras (313), IIT Kharagpur (346), IIT Rourkee (401), Delhi University (441), IIT Guwahati (601-650), University of Mumbai (601-650), University of Pune (701+) and University of Kolkata (701+).
"In India, five Indian Institutes of Technology remain the country's only representatives in the top 400," John O'Leary, executive member of the QS Global Academic Advisory Board, wrote in the report.
The rankings of universities were based on research, teaching, employability and international outlook, according to the QS report. The list is finally compiled based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), student-to-faculty ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5%), and international student ratio (5%).
