Apple is expected to launch its next-gen flagship smartphone, the iPhone 8, sometime in fall of 2017 and the competition in the premium smartphone segment just got tougher with the launch of Google's Pixel XL 2 around the same time. Meanwhile, OnePlus has already announced the arrival of OnePlus 5 on June 20 in select markets, including India and the UK.
Freshly leaked iPhone 8 renders clearly confirm a bezel-less aka edge-to-edge display with a glass back panel in line with earlier leaks. The new leak suggests the handset will indeed come with a fingerprint sensor, but without the physical home button.
The latest report by iDrop News reconfirms several rumoured specifications, including the quick-charging technology as evident in the leaked iPhone 8 renders. Also, the iPhone 8 is said to feature a vertical dual rear camera setup, unlike the iPhone 7 Plus and the recently confirmed OnePlus 5 handset, which come with a horizontal dual camera setup.
Although the vertical rear camera setup with dual lens mechanism will likely help in implementing 3D and Augmented Reality (AR) features, those who are used to the horizontal setup on the iPhone 7 Plus will find it a bit inconvenient with the new camera alignment.
Apart from the 3D sensing capabilities, the iPhone 8 front camera is expected to feature a laser and infrared sensor with support for Apple's new ARKit, which is currently said to be under development.
Coming to the pricing details, the iPhone 8 is expected to cost more than $1000 (Rs. 64,296 approx.), which is almost double the cost of OnePlus 5 whose estimated cost is touted to be Rs. 32,999 for the entry-level model and Rs. 37,999 for the 8GB variant.
With OnePlus 5's price touching close to Rs. 40,000 for the top-end variant, Google's Pixel XL 2 could be another tough contender in the mid-range price bracket with premium specs. This is especially true as the Pixel XL 2 boasts similar specs to the OnePlus 5 with the added benefit of running Android O out-of-the-box.
OnePlus 5 will once again be part of its traditional invite-only event and you need to get lucky with your invite code in order to qualify for the purchase of the new OnePlus handset.
