Will Smith, Jared Leto and Tom Hardy will be among the cast members for DC Comics' supervillain film "Suicide Squad".
Warner Bros. revealed the casting for the much-hyped film in an announcement Tuesday. The studio also stated that the movie will be released in 3D as well as 2D.
While Smith will play the role of Deadshot, Hardy will star as the group's leader – Rick Flagg. Leto, on the other hand, will follow in Heath Ledger's footsteps and play the role of the Joker.
The other cast members include Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang and model-turned-actress Cara Delevinge will be playing the Enchantress. Delevinge is also in Warner Bros.' "Pan".
David Ayer is responsible for writing as well as directing the flick. Ayer recently released the World War II tank thriller "Fury".
Earlier, it was being speculated that Jesse Eisenberg of "The Social Network" fame would also be involved with the project, but he has not been named as part of the official team, nor the official cast. However, it is expected that he and other actors might make cameo appearances, playing either villains or heroes in the Warner Bros.' other DC Comics-based movies.
"The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer's amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero," said Greg Silverman, president, creative development and worldwide production, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
"Suicide Squad" is slated to release on 5 August, 2016.
Charles Roven is producing along with Richard Suckle; and Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and DC's COO Geoff Johns are exec producers, Deadline reports.
Zack and Deborah Snyder are already guiding many of the DC movies along with Wilson and Johns.
