Thursday's episode of "The Vampire Diaries" saw Damon offering to take the cure to vampirism along with Elena, which will result in both of them turning into humans.
Because Nina Dobrev's exit from the show has already been revealed, chances are high that she will finally take the cure and turn into a human, enabling her exit from the show that focuses on the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls. And if Damon's plan to take the cure with Elena materialises, then season 6 could be the final one for actor Ian Somerhalder as well.
While there has been no confirmation of Somerhalder's exit from the show, rumours of him bidding adieu to "The Vampire Diaries" gained momentum soon after Dobrev announced her departure.
Additionally, actor Paul Wesley too hinted in a previous interview that the focus of season 7 would be on a whole new cast, sparking rumours that "The Vampire Diaries" would no longer be about the Salvatore brothers and Elena Gilbert, the girl who got caught up between Damon and Stefan.
As for how the season will end, showrunner Julie Plec recently revealed that the final scene will be a flash forward. "The season ends with a flash forward," Plec told Entertainment Weekly. "The show's not cut yet, so by the time I'm done with it, it might not, but currently it does."
If Damon's plan succeeds, then the final moments will see Elena and Damon living life happily as humans. But because nothing goes without complications on "The Vampire Diaries" possibility is high of Elena taking the cure alone.
The synopsis of the upcoming episode also teases that Elena is conflicted about Damon's suggestion. "As Alaric and Jo reluctantly participate in their bachelor and bachelorette parties, Damon and Elena discuss the ramifications from an impulsive offer that Damon makes," the summary reads. "Unsure of what to do, Elena turns to Bonnie and Jo for advice, but is left conflicted when Bonnie raises some unanticipated concerns."
