Irrfan Khan is among the Bollywood celebrities, who have stamped their presence in Hollywood. The 49-year-old actor's versatility and acting prowess has landed him many Hollywood projects and has given him recognition at several international film festivals. Today, Irrfan is one of the most visible exports of Bollywood.
But how did it all start for the National School of Drama graduate? Here's a look at the films that made him an international celebrity.
The Warrior
This Indo-British production tells the story of Lafcadia, a warrior in Rajasthan. Irrfan played the role of the protagonist, who tries to give up fighting. This 2002 production went on to bag two BAFTAS, including the award for Best British Film.
The Namesake
This 2006 Mira Nair film, an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's book, was noted for its sensitive depiction of an immigrant family's experience in the US. Irrfan played the role of Ashoke Ganguli, who depicted the hope, struggle and tradition that defines the Indian community's everyday experience. This role landed him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Slumdog Millionaire
Though he may not have basked in the Slumdog Millionaire Oscar glory as other actors, he still made quite an impact with his short role. He played the role of a morally ambiguous cop who interrogated Dev Patel, thereby offering the audience a key-hole perspective into his life.
Life of Pi
Irrfan played the role of the adult Pi or Priscine Patel. His moving narration drew us into the story of Pi and Richard Parker and added a layer of depth to this fantastical tale. But playing the role of Pi wasn't easy for Irrfan.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal he said, "This part was asking me to redefine my method; the way I approached the character. I needed to work on different levels and that took time."
Jurassic World
Irrfan's character, Simon Masrani, is a businessman who is adventurous and curious. In the end, it is this curiosity that leads him to develop Indominus rex, a dangerous scientific experiment which poses a threat to the park's guests.
You can catch Jurassic World at 1 pm and 9 pm IST on Saturday, October 22, on Sony Pix.
