Shaktikanta Das, former finance secretary and current member of the finance commission, has been appointed as the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India on December 11, Tuesday.
Das was considered as one of the most powerful men in the country during his stint as Union Economic Affairs Secretary in 2016-17.
Das is taking over from Urjit Patel who stepped down from his post on Monday amid speculations of an ongoing rift between the RBI and the Central government.
Das is a retired IAS officer from the 1980 batch from Tamil Nadu.
The new RBI governor's portfolio includes Principal Secretary for the Department of Industries in Tamil Nadu, Special Commissioner for Department of Revenues in Tamil Nadu, special secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Finance as well as the joint secretary in the Department of Expenditure of the Ministry of Finance in the Indian Government.
Das was appointed as the Union Economic Affairs Secretary in 2016 and his tenure continued until 2017.
