Consuming five or more glasses of white wine and liquor regularly doubles the chances of rosacea in women, a research revealed.

Researchers from the Brown University, Rhode Island, US, carried out the study. Led by Dr Abrar A Qureshi, the researchers carried out the study by examining 82,737 women from the Nurses' Health Study II over a span of 14 years, from 1991 to 2005.
They found that increased alcohol consumption raises the risk of rosacea, which is a skin disease which is chronic by nature and causes redness around cheeks and nose. This redness is caused because of enlarged blood vessels under the skin, which is known as vascular rosacea. If it causes pustules and papules on the skin, it is called inflammatory rosacea.
According to the statistics by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, around 14 million people are affected by rosacea in the US.
People belonging to the age groups of 30 to 60 are usually impacted by this disorder while women undergoing menopause are usually more prone to this disease.
The exact reasons leading to rosacea is still a mystery, though researchers believe the disease to be an outcome of abnormalities present in the immune system or blood vessels.
The study revealed that 4,945 women had developed rosacea. Non-drinking women were at a lesser risk of developing the disease compared to the women who consumed alcohol.
"Our research contributes to the sizeable body of evidence that demonstrates alcohol's harmful effects on the body, including the skin. Science has identified many factors that may potentially cause rosacea, and our study indicates that alcohol may be one of them," said Dr Qureshi, as reported by Medical News Today.
"Women who wish to maintain the health of their skin — and their overall health — should limit their alcohol consumption," he added.
