Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away on Thursday, had once taken a dig at Amitabh Bachchan while referring to his then-rumoured relationship with Rekha.
In an old interview during 1987, Vajpayee had made some remarks on Big B, after the latter had resigned from his MP position for being accused in Bofors scam. Speaking on the same, the BJP leader had raised some hard-hitting questions regarding Amitabh's resignation.
"He was also accused in the scam, but it is his brother who was mainly charged. He all of a sudden went to Switzerland leaving all his well-established business in India. Why did he go? What is he doing there? His kids are studying in expensive schools, how are their fees being paid? These questions are being raised inside and outside parliament, but no satisfactory answer has come yet. This has destroyed the PM's image. Maybe to save the PM, Amitabh Bachchan had to resign. He should not have come into politics," Vajpayee had said when asked if he thinks he was involved in the scam.
Continuing his statement, the renowned political leader then took a sly dig at Amitabh and Rekha's rumoured affair.
'Before elections, I was asked if Amitabh Bachchan would fight against me, then what would I do. I said I would have to request Rekha to make him fight from our side. I can't compete against actors. It is fine to be friends with actors, but this friendship should not affect politics," he added.
Amitabh and Rekha's rumoured relationship was once a much-talked-about topic, despite the superstar being married to Jaya Bachchan. Although he never admitted having any such liaison with the actress, Rekha had many times made certain remarks that made many believe there was romance between them.
Vajpayee was known for his great leadership and wit. This remark from him again validates the fact.
