Taniya Hassan, a girl living in Delhi, was left stunned when she was asked to vacate her flat by the landlord, an Army Colonel, as she belonged to the Muslim community. The incident took place on 4 August in Delhi and her Facebook post condemning the actions of the Colonel have now gone viral.
"I was totally shaken and taken aback. The landlord is a colonel. Despite showing him my Aadhaar card and all such documents he uttered such words. It is an utter shame that persons with such beliefs are in service of this country," Taniya wrote on her Facebook post.
"This is not the first time that I have been treated differently for being a Muslim. And that is when I'm not visibly a one- I don't wear a burka, I don't cover my head, even my first name sounds appeasingly Hindu. The older I grow, the more I'm shown the ugly fissure of religious differentiation," she further added.
She further claimed that the landlord had allegedly told her that he does not rent out flats to Muslims as she might be related to a terrorist organization.
The girl's post has now gone viral and has been shared more than 200 times. Several Facebook users have condemned the actions of the Colonel and have even apologised to Taniya on his behalf.
"Very sorry to hear about your bad experience. I apologise on behalf of the country," a Facebook user commented on her post.
