India's Davis Cup doubles tennis pair of Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes will face off against one another in the US Open mixed doubles semifinal, as they partner Yung-Jan Chan and Martina Hingis respectively, at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York.
Paes and Hingis, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, are a treat to watch with the Indian star enthralling the fans with his amazing reflexes on the court. Having played alongside Paes, the big-serving Bopanna knows Paes' game well enough to provide stiff competition to the champion pair.
Bopanna, though, not only has to contend with Paes, but also Hingis, who is as good a doubles player as her Indian partner. Hingis also possesses a dangerous game from the baseline, which makes the Indo-Swiss pair a lethal combination.
The fourth seeds have reached the semifinals of the competition without many matches under their belt, as they have progressed in the competition, after having received walkovers in their last two rounds.
The Indo-Swiss pair defeated the US pairing of Claire Liu and Taylor Harry Fritz in the first round of the competition after which they have not played any competitive mixed doubles match, which could encourage Bopanna and Yung-Jan to attack the fourth seeds from the start as they might take some time to get into their groove.
Bopanna and Hung-Jan have not faced much trouble in reaching the semifinals, barring their quarterfinal fixture against Su-Wei Hsieh and Henri Kontinen, who lost the match through a super tie-breaker. Bopanna, who has a booming serve, needs to be spot on with his service game and take full advantage of it, or else Paes and his dominance at the net might be too hot for the second seeds in the competition.
Bopanna, who has never won any mixed doubles Grand Slam title, is just two steps away from his maiden crown, but Paes and Hingis pose a major hurdle to his major ambitions.
