After the exit of Leander Paes, the pressure will be on Rohan Bopanna, who is the lone Indian remaining in the men's doubles competition of the US Open. Bopanna and his Romanian partner, Florin Mergea are set to face the ninth seeded pair of Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the third round of the competition at the Louis Armstrong stadium in New York.
The match promises to be an entertaining one with both the pairs having won their respective first and second round matches with ease. Neither pair have dropped a single set in the competition, which just showcases their dominance in the 2015 US Open men's doubles.
The Indo-Romanian pair complement one another very well on court, as Bopanna has a very good service game and Mergea has an impressive array of strokes from the baseline.
With Mergea's experience in the singles arena, the Romanian has taken the game to his opponents from the baseline to good effect. Both the players have a decent game at the net as well, which is very essential in doubles.
Bopanna and Mergea have not won any Grand Slam title together so far, but their performance in Wimbledon was encouraging as they ousted the top seeds, Mike and Bob Bryan, but lost in the semifinals. However, Bopanna and Mergea have won big titles such as the Madrid Masters and Stuggart Open.
The sixth seeded pair have it in them to win their first Grand Slam together, but they need to be on the top of their game for the remainder of the competition, and especially against their third round opponents, Nestor and Roger-Vasselin, who won the Cincinnati Masters recently.
Nestor and Roger-Vasselin might have started playing together as a unit recently, but their performances on the court suggestes they have a great understanding. Nestor and Roger-Vasselin have the making of a great doubles pair, as they have already defeated the Bryan brothers in their short stint together.
If Bopanna and Mergea are not on the top of their game, Nestor and Roger-Vasselin could well be one step closer to their first Grand Slam title.
