Roger Federer showed he is at the top of his game at this US Open with an impressive performance over John Isner in the fourth round. On Wednesday, Federer will have to bring his A-Game again when he plays the in-form Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open.
Federer was put to the test by Isner and his powerful serves in the fourth round, and the Swiss master passed it well enough, winning a couple of tie-breakers before taking the third set 7-5.
"I'm very pleased [with the victory] because I knew of the toughness of the matchup," Federer said after his win over Isner. "I think it happened very quickly how tough it was going to be because we were not really getting that many chances.
"You could sense if John really hit his spots and I would do the same, it would be tough for either one of us to break through.
"I had to fight off some tough serves. I thought John was going really big, like with some massive pace. It was just tough. I picked the right sides. I think confidence helped me. Then the break [in the third set] clearly was nice. But I kind of felt it was coming. He was maybe not having as much energy anymore. But still it was nice to break and win at the same time."
Federer will face a different challenge in Gasquet, who does not have those big serves, but is someone capable of playing some "did you see that" shots, much like the great man himself.
Gasquet seems to have found his Grand Slam mojo this year, and after reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon, the Frenchman will target another last-four place at this US Open. Federer will know to stop Gasquet, coming off an impressive win over Tomas Berdych in the fourth round, from doing that, he will need to produce the kind of tennis we have been treated to from the 17-time Grand Slam winner in the tournament so far.
"I'm not sure if I've seen maybe Gasquet play as well as he is right now," Federer added on playing Gasquet. "I really like the way he played in Wimbledon, and also now here.
"I haven't seen that much. But the match I saw that he played against Stan [Wawrinka] and Novak at Wimbledon was impressive. He had a good attitude. He was fighting. Good shot selection. Now he's backing it up. I'm sure he gained confidence from Wimbledon. That's why I expect it to be tougher than maybe in previous years against him or previous times.
"I feel like this could be one of the tougher Gasquets I've played in previous years, so I expect it to be difficult."
