Sania Mirza made a bright start to her US Open 2016 campaign in the women's doubles event as she along with her new on-court partner Barbora Strycova comfortably defeated the American pair of Jada Myii Hart and Ena Shibahara. They won 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday. On Friday, the Indian star will be in action once again, this time in the mixed doubles event.
Sania, 29, who partners Croatian tennis player Ivan Dodig in mixed doubles, will take on the American pair of Taylor Townsend and Donald Young at the P6/Old Grandstand.
The Indian glam-girl last won the US Open in the mixed doubles event in 2004 along with Bruno Soares. Apart from that, Sania came close to lifting the French Open mixed doubles title as well earlier this year, but she and Dodig couldn't get past the star pair of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis in the final.
Sania partnered Rohan Bopanna in the recently-concluded Rio 2016 Olympics, where the Indian duo put up an impressive show as they reached the semi-finals of the event, where they ultimately suffered a defeat against Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram of the United States.
Now, a fresh tournament calls for a fresh start and Sania and Ivan will look to give a dominating performance in the final Grand Slam of the calendar year.
US Open 2016: Mixed doubles: Sania Mirza - Ivan Dodig (CRO) vs Taylor Townsend (USA) - Donald Young (USA) is expected to start at 5 p.m. EST (2:30 a.m. IST [Saturday]).
