The League Cup has the reputation of producing a lot of upsets over the seasons. Time and again have Premier League heavyweights faltered to teams from the lower tier of English football, and Manchester City must be aware of that.

The 2013-14 Premier League champions take on Hull City in the quarter final of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium. The English league leaders hammered Crystal Palace 5-1 in the previous round of the competion, and the momentum is believed to be with Manuel Pellegrini's side now.

The Blues also bagged a 3-1 win over Southampton last Saturday to move atop the Premier League charts once again.

Lifting the Premier League for a second time in three years remains the sole aim for Pellegrini, but he wants to try his luck in the other competitions as well. "Maybe for teams that are out of some competitions — the Champions League or the Capital One Cup — it is easier to play in the Premier League. But we always want to continue in all the competitions," the Chilean said.

Hull City, led by Steve Bruce, meanwhile, are coming into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat against Derby County in the Championship last Friday, and that has got to hurt. The Tigers were on a roll after being undefeated since their away loss against Brighton and Hove Albion on 12 September.

However, Bruce can take the confidence of having defeated Premier League sides Swansea and Leicester City in the League Cup earlier this season, to go for the kill in the massive game tonight.

"We have got to have the belief that we can go and take them [Man City] on. Last year in the Premier League we caused them a few problems," Bruce said. "Up until Friday we hadn't been beaten for four months. We've had a really consistent run - we've only lost three out of 22 games, and so we can feel a bit confident."
