A struggling NorthEast United FC go into their second home game of the Indian Super League this season as they take on high-flying Chennaiyin FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati Tuesday evening.
The home side has been unable to record either a win or a draw in this season of the ISL and remain the rockbottom side at the moment following the end of three games.
Their opponents, Chennaiyin FC, however, have produced a brilliant fightback after winning their last two games with some impact. From a total of four games, Chennai have two wins and two draws, and they will be keen on continuing that momentum going into the game.
Colombian forward Stiven Mendoza currently is the highest scorer in the ISL, with his tally of five goals coming in the last two games for Chennaiyin FC. The short-statured man is definitely one of the key men in the match, and his link-up with Elano will be one to watch for.
Another man to watch for will be Indian forward Jayesh Rane, who has been contributing equally for the Southern Indian side this season.
"Yes, the two wins is a good thing. After two losses, we're coming up with the wins. We're getting the rhythm now and we hope we make the most of it in the next game against NorthEast United," the 24-year-old after his side's 2-0 win against Mumbai City FC.
Heaping praise on Elano and Mendoza, Jayesh said, "They're very good players. If they don't click then who will? It was unlucky for me (hitting the crossbar in the game against Mumbai) but it was good for the team since we scored and I'm happy for that."
Chennaiyin head coach Marco Materazzi also praised the Elano-Mendoza combination. "It's really important that two champions like Elano and Mendoza know each other but as I said, it's important that they know that they're both going for the team and not their own glory. But our strength is also our defence which was really good. If we keep going like this and playing together, we're going to go far. In the second half, we had the right attitude to win the game," the Italy world-cup winner said after their last game.
It won't be too easy for Chennaiyin FC however, as NorthEast FC possess attackers like Nico Velez, Diomansy Kamara, as well as Francis Dadzie, who have the potential to shine on any given day.
And after the loss in their first home game, expect them to make a strong point in their second home match.
